Four Canadian soldiers were killed Saturday at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright. Thirty-nine more were injured.
Sergeant Morgan Wong.
Private Shaun Farrell.
Private Aidan Goulding.
Private Hayden Lykkemark.
All four were serving with the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, based at Edmonton. Sergeant Wong came from the Loyal Edmonton Regiment. They were on Exercise APOLLO SHOOTER, live-fire training, when a fire ignited and high winds drove it into the unit administrative area.
Flags at every Town of Oakville facility came down to half-mast this morning. They stay there until further notice.
Oakville knows this loss. Colonel Geoff Parker was born and raised here. He commanded the 2nd Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, and he was the most senior member of the Canadian Forces to die in Afghanistan. When we lost him in 2010 I said our community had lost one of its best and brightest souls. The Lorne Scots monument in George’s Square stands for the same reason.
My dad was prior service. Growing up in a military family you learn early that the training is not the preparation for the danger. The training is the danger. Four families were told that on Saturday.
To the four families, to the thirty-nine recovering, and to everyone serving with 3 PPCLI: Oakville is with you. We stand with Canadians and the Canadian Armed Forces as they work to understand what happened.
