WORTH KNOWING ....
FOr our disability communities these are some valuable considerations to add to that END OF LIFE PLAN
Imagine you were in an emergency situation right now or are in severe pain from a life limiting illness or disease….close your eyes and imagine everything changing today. This is the reality for SO MANY PEOPLE.
Extreme measures to save lives is the base of the medical model of care in this planet, and are incredible, amazing, IF that’s what someone wants.
Body autonomy should exist in all areas and death is no different.
How does it make sense that a person can spend their entire life making their own decisions, but if they lose capacity without clearly documenting their wishes, others end up making critical healthcare decisions on their behalf?
So many people avoid talking about or thinking about death, to them pointing not even having advanced care directives made. You don’t need to be old, or sick, or injured to have these done. EVERYONE will be there one day. Being prepared means receiving the best care.
In North America people spend more time planning what happens to their possessions post death than documenting what should happen to their body and medical care before they die.
One of the biggest questions around death is, if autonomy means the right to direct our own lives, how do we ensure that autonomy is still honoured when we can no longer speak for ourselves?
That is why advance care planning is not solely paperwork. It’s about preserving a person’s voice, values, and choices, when they need it most.
