Colonel William Chisholm, an enterprising merchant and shipbuilder, founded the town and built Erchless overlooking his new harbour and Lake Ontario. dens of Erchless. The Oakville Museum offers guided tours of the Chisholm family home, changing exhibitions, special events and programs that tell the fascinating stories of our town. Oakville Museum is located on the Treaty Lands #22 of the Mississaugas of the Credit. We acknowledge and thank the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, for being stewards of this traditional territory.

Our next FREE Sunset Socials concert is only two weeks away! Join us August 20 at 7 p.m. for a night of old-time music, bluegrass and Irish tunes with Anh Phung and Jaron Freeman-Fox!

Anh Phung is an award-winning flute phenom whose powerful musical voice steers her through everything from classical to hip-hop, world folk music, rock and jazz. Her performances have ranged from soloing with l’Orchestre Symphonique de Québec to leading the prog-rock band Tullstars, a flute-based tribute to Jethro Tull.

Jaron Freeman-Fox blends traditional fiddle music with influences from around the world to create a sound that is truly his own. He apprenticed under fiddle pioneer Oliver Schroer and went on to study baroque violin, Carnatic music in South India, Morin Khuur in Mongolia and more. His band “The Opposite of Everything” has won three Canadian Folk Music awards and he's performed on over 50 records.

Thank you to the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton for hosting Oakville's Emancipation Day Picnic at the Museum this week. What a joyful and inspiring day! We look forward to welcoming everyone back again next year.

On August 1, 1834, the Slavery Abolition Act ended the colonial enslavement of people of African descent throughout the British Empire. In the 19th century, Emancipation Day celebrations became important expressions of identity for Black communities in Canada.

Oakville's first Emancipation Day picnic was held in George's Square in the 1850s. In this photo, Moses Brantford Jr. is shown leading an Emancipation Day parade down Dalhousie Street in Amherstburg, Ontario in 1894.

The Emancipation Day Picnic is almost here! Join us Monday, August 3 from 1 to 4 p.m. for a celebration of community, music, and learning as we honour Emancipation Day and celebrate Oakville’s Black history.

Presented by the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton, the event commemorates August 1, 1834 when slavery was abolished in Canada and throughout the British Empire. Enjoy free family activities plus performances by The Real Blues Jammers with Michael Branton and the Yaadie Tree-O. Food available for purchase with free ice cream courtesy of the CCAH. Don't forget to pack your lawn chair or picnic blanket!
