Update!

Great Blue Heron Update:

This heron was originally rescued by Heaven's Wildlife Rescue Rehabilitation & Education Centre and then transferred to us for care & treatment.

The heron had sustained a fractured fibula/tibula after presumably being hit by car (found in a ditch). The leg was stabilized on admission and the heron has been kept comfortable with medications for pain (as well as an antibiotic for an open wound at the fracture site). The heron is doing well in care- bright, alert, eating well, and is now standing!

We are encouraged by the progress we are seeing!

We recently received a call about an injured Great Blue Heron. We were able to locate the bird and safely bring them back to the rescue, where we discovered they had a broken leg. Because this type of injury requires specialized care, we transferred them to a clinic experienced in treating avian species. 🩶🪶

We’re hoping for a smooth recovery for this beautiful bird!

A little red squirrel appreciation post 🐿️❤️

About a month ago, we admitted a litter of seven baby red squirrels into care!

Although red squirrels can be found throughout Ontario, they become much less common here in southwestern Ontario, where the coniferous trees they prefer are less abundant. We typically associate these feisty little squirrels with areas a little north than us but we do admit them every now and again!

They may be tiny, but anyone who knows red squirrels knows they have more than enough personality to make up for it! ❤️

🕸️Fake spiderwebs may look spooky, but they can be downright terrifying for wildlife! 🕷️

🦇Birds, bats, squirrels and other small animals can easily become tangled in the stretchy fibres, leading to stress, injury or even death.

The good news? There are so many fun ways to decorate for Halloween without the fake webbing! Pumpkins, inflatables, lights, projections and natural fall décor can make your yard just as spooky. 🍂🎃

This Halloween, let’s keep the scares for the humans and keep our wild neighbours safe. 🧡

🐦 MILLIONS OF BIRDS ON THE MOVE ACROSS ONTARIO!

If you took a look at the radar on IW Pro this evening, you might have thought it was raining across a large part of Southern Ontario. But despite all that green showing up on radar, much of it isn’t rain at all. It’s birds!

Fall migration is ramping up across Ontario as millions of birds begin their seasonal journey south ahead of the colder months.

Weather radar is sensitive enough to detect more than just rain and snow. When huge numbers of birds take flight at the same time, especially after sunset when many species migrate, they can produce widespread radar returns that look surprisingly similar to precipitation.

That’s exactly what we’re seeing tonight, with a large area of what looks like light rain spreading across Southern Ontario on radar despite mostly dry conditions.

And while all these birds are on the move tonight, there’s something simple you can do to help them out!

Many birds migrate at night and artificial lighting can attract and disorient them, particularly around cities and tall buildings. Turning off unnecessary outdoor and indoor lights, or closing your blinds and curtains, can help reduce the risk of birds becoming confused or colliding with buildings.

So if you don’t need a light on tonight, consider switching it off. It saves a little electricity and makes the nighttime journey a bit safer for the millions of birds travelling overhead.

Another cool sign that summer is quickly coming to an end across Ontario.

A Special Request in Support of Heaven's Wildlife Rehabilitation

Heaven's Wildlife Rescue Rehabilitation & Education Centre has been an incredible support to us and to countless injured and orphaned wild animals. We truly would be lost without the care, compassion, and dedication they provide every day.

Right now, they are overwhelmed, operating at full capacity, and have had to close intake temporarily. They urgently need our community's support.
We will be collecting donations of puppy kibble and canned chicken, to assist in feeding the many wildlife currently in their care. Financial contributions are also needed to help cover the costs of caring for the many animals in their care.

Update on the little raccoon from St. Thomas admitted a month ago with mange!

Her treatment is going very well! her skin has been healing and her fur has begun growing back in! She still has a ways to go but the progress this month has her feeling a lot better!
