COMMUNITY UPDATE - TREE CUTTING

Earlier this week, the MCK reached out to Hydro-Quebec regarding their recent tree-cutting operation. In the letter, the MCK confirmed it was unaware of any outreach attempt from Hydro-Quebec regarding tree-cutting, and expressed wanting to establish proactive and regular communications, so that this situation does not occur again. A response has not been received yet but future developments will be shared with the community.

Shé:kon, this update is to confirm the information that a hearing date has now been scheduled for September 23, 2026 in the Federal Court case regarding the cancellation of the election. Efforts were made on MCK's end to reach a settlement between the parties that would have resolved the matter sooner, but because no agreement was reached, the decision will have to come from the Court. We will keep the community updated on this matter when new information is available.

Today, a joint operation by the SQ, the SPVM and the Kahnawà:ke Peacekeepers led to several arrestations, as well as fi****ms and drug seizures. (Please note that the date of the release should read June 17 and not June 7th)

Kanehsatake Security assisted in securing the community during the operation so it could be safely carried out. This incident shows once again the crucial need for public security in Kanehsatà:ke to be properly funded in order to better protect our community on the long-term. We are pursuing every effort to do so, and will keep updating the community on progress made.

Congratulations to this year's Ratiwennenhá:wi graduates!

The Mohawk Council and people of Kanehsatà:ke would like to offer their most sincere condolences to all family and friends on the recent passing of Mr. Frank Marquis, caretaker at Tioweró:ton for many years.

This position was a great responsibility, which he undertook with dedication, pride, and love of the territory. Patrolling the lakes and surrounding areas to help guard against poachers or polluters was no easy task, and working through the winter isolation could sometimes be a hardship. We could all be reassured that if we got lost or injured, Frank Marquis would act with urgent professionalism to make sure we came home safely.
Frank Marquis will be missed by many.

The legacy he left behind is one of love and care, in those who took his place and who now care for Tioweró:ton with the same love and dedication professionalism that make it a special place for us all.

Rest in peace at the Creator’s house,
