📚🍁 Local Author Spotlight: Ida Linehan Young

Born and raised a Newfoundlander, Ida draws inspiration from the storytelling traditions passed down through her family, particularly from her father, Edward Linehan, and her maternal grandfather, Frank Power. She loves researching Newfoundland's past and bringing little-known stories and historical events to life through her writing. ❤️

Ida has written across several genres, including historical fiction, memoir, speculative fiction, crime, and children's literature. Her books include Being Mary Ro, The Promise, The Liars, The Stolen Ones, If I Cry I'll Fill the Ocean, The Room Upstairs, and A Secret Close to Home.

Her work has received numerous honours, including the NL Reads 2022 title and the Margaret Duley Award for The Stolen Ones, while If I Cry I'll Fill the Ocean was an International Impact Book Award winner. 📖🏆

🐾📚 Meet Oreo — our resident library cat and local celebrity!🌟

Oreo has been an important member of the Old Perlican Public Library family since she came to live at the library, where she has taken on the very official job of Town Mouser. She’s also a friendly greeter, expert napper, and dedicated supervisor of library activities. 🐈‍⬛

Oreo even became a CBC star in 2024, when CBC visited the library to tell her story! Since then, she has continued to charm patrons and visitors — especially those who arrive bearing treats, toys, and her favourite thing to play with: paper bags. 😸

We're pretty sure every library should have a cat, but we're especially lucky to have ours. ❤️📖

📚🍁 Meet Newfoundland author Wayne Johnston!

Born and raised in Goulds, Wayne Johnston looks back on his childhood in this tender, funny, and wonderfully Newfoundland memoir. Set in 1966–67, the story follows seven-year-old Wayne, a sickly boy who spends much of his time at home and with his eccentric and witty grandmother, Lucy.

The book was named one of CBC's Best Canadian Nonfiction Books, won the 2023 Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour, and was shortlisted for Canada Reads 2025.
