Kids are heading back to school and they’re excited (and yes, so are the parents 😉). It’s been a while since children have been in a school routine, so let’s all take extra caution on the roads:

✅ Slow down in school/playground zones
✅ Be ready for kids who may not be paying attention when crossing
✅ Parents—remind your kids where and when it’s safe to cross

Olds RCMP and our community partners will be at Walmart Olds today from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for Cram the Cruiser Back to School!

We’re asking our community to help with one final push to support local students and families who may need a little extra help with back-to-school supplies this year.

Every donation helps ensure a student can walk into the classroom feeling prepared and ready to learn.

Our neighbours in Mountain View County are currently under a fire restriction. While this restriction does not apply within the Town of Olds, we encourage everyone to be aware of the regulations wherever you're spending time outdoors.

🔥FIRE RESTRICTION IN EFFECT🔥

Effective July 29, 2026, Mountain View County has implemented a county-wide Fire Restriction due to current and forecasted conditions. This restriction will remain in place until further notice.

🚫What's not allowed:
• All Outdoor Fires, as defined by the County’s Fire Bylaw, must be extinguished.
• Lighting any Outdoor Fires is prohibited.
• This includes open fires, fireworks, recreational fires and fires that have previously received a Fire Permit.

✅What's still allowed:
• Acceptable burning barrels
• Acceptable fire pits
• Acceptable outdoor fireplaces
• Barbecues
• Household fireplaces
• AER flaring

All current fire permits and fireworks permits are canceled.

No new permits will be issued until the Fire Restriction is lifted.

Further information on Mountain View County’s Fire Bylaw can be obtained on our website at: www.mountainviewcounty.com/p/fire-permits-regulations or by contacting the Mountain View County office at 403-335-3311.

Fire Restrictions are also in effect for the Calgary Forestry Protection Area (FPA) and parts of the Rocky Mountain House FPA within Mountain View County. Campfire rules vary by location in the FPAs, including in areas managed by Alberta Parks and Parks Canada. Before travelling, check Fire Bans in Alberta Parks (albertaparks.ca/albertaparks-ca/advisories-and-public-safety/fire-bans/) and Alberta Fire Bans ( www.albertafirebans.ca/) for your destination to confirm whether campfires are permitted and whether any additional restrictions are in place for the Forestry Protection Areas.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of retired Deputy Fire Chief Brian Hoschka.

Brian dedicated more than 37 years of service to the Olds Fire Department, serving our community from 1977 until his retirement in late 2014. Throughout his career, Brian was a respected leader, mentor, and firefighter whose commitment to protecting others left a lasting impact on our department and the community we serve.

His dedication, knowledge, and friendship touched the lives of countless firefighters over the years, and his legacy will continue to be felt within the Olds Fire Department for generations to come.

On behalf of the members of the Olds Fire Department, both past and present, we extend our deepest condolences to Brian's family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Brian Patrick Hoschka
Oct 8th, 1955 - June 18th, 2026
With hearts full of both gratitude and profound sadness, we announce the passing of Brian Patrick Hoschka, age 70, of Airdrie, Alberta, on June 18, 2026. Brian passed away with his family by his side following a brief but fiercely aggressive battle with blood cancer.

To know him was to love him; the world has truly lost a great man, husband, father, mentor, loyal friend, and a fierce protector of his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and deep community roots.

Brian was born on October 8, 1955, to Pat and Marilyn Hoschka in Olds, Alberta. He attended school from grades one through twelve in Olds before beginning his career with Hudson’s Bay Oil and Gas in 1978. This marked the start of a lifelong dedication to the oilfield industry that only ended with his recent passing. Working in Regulatory Compliance, a Journeyman Millwright, and later as an API 653 Tank Inspector, Brian remained heavily active in the industry mentoring the next generation of oilfield professionals.

Beyond his career, Brian was profoundly committed to public service. On September 1, 1977, he began a remarkable 37-year stint with the Olds Fire Department. Rising from the rank of rookie to Deputy Fire Chief, he served his community with distinction until his retirement from the department in 2014, when he and Robynn relocated to Airdrie.

Brian’s greatest joy was his family, who affectionately knew him as "Pops." He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Robynn; his son, Mitch (Lauren) Hoschka of Cochrane, and their children, Knox and Dacia; his daughter, Jessica (Micah) Blakeley of Calgary, and their daughter, Haylee.

He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Kevin (Cynthia) Hoffman of Calgary; brother, Brent Hoschka of Olds; sisters, Deb (Peter) Sanden of Hussar; and Paula (Arla) Horn of Edmonton.
Brian was predeceased by his father, Pat, in 2024, and his mother, Marilyn, in 2025

A celebration of life will be held at a future date to honor a man who spread love and kindness wherever he went and who will live in our hearts forever.

Today, we’re celebrating all the dads, grandpas, and father figures who somehow manage to be experts in BBQ, thermostat management, questionable jokes, and life advice.

A special shoutout to the dads on our department who answer calls at all hours, serve our community with pride, and still make it home in time to ask, “Who left the lights on?”

We hope your day is filled with family, good food, and at least a few laughs at your own dad jokes.

This past weekend, members from Olds Fire tackled the Firefighter Stair Climb in Calgary, conquering 57 floors and over 1,300 stairs.

We're incredibly proud of these firefighters for taking on the challenge, proving once again that elevators are optional and hard work is not.

Congratulations on an amazing accomplishment and for representing Olds Fire with dedication, grit, and a little extra leg soreness this week!

It is with deep sadness that the Olds Fire Department shares the passing of Donald Graham.

Don dedicated an incredible 65 years of his life to the Fire Service in Alberta, with his final posting proudly serving alongside members of the Olds Fire Department. His commitment to public safety, his dedication to the fire service, and the knowledge he shared with generations of firefighters left a lasting impact on our department and the communities he served.

A celebration of Don's life will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion in Olds, Alberta.

On behalf of the members of the Olds Fire Department, thank you, Don, for your decades of service, mentorship, and commitment to the fire service. Your legacy will continue to live on through those whose lives you touched.
