Tonight we trained on ladder placement and VEIS / VIS, which is a quick method of searching a bedroom or any room that can be isolated from the fire area. The smoke visible is from our battle fogger and we are using an older acquired structure. This type of realistic training helps our members make quick search and rescues when it counts.

On Tuesday, October 6th at 16:48, the Oliver and District Fire Department responded to a report of a patient down an embankment in a creek.

14 firefighters responded with 4 apparatus to the scene.

Crews worked to safely access the steep terrain, package the patient, and completed the rescue to bring the individual up from the creek.

The patient was transferred to BC Ambulance Service paramedics for further assessment.

As always, OFD would like to thank our local paramedics for the combined rescue and positive outcome.

Safety Reminder:

With seasonal weather changes and decreasing water levels, the Oliver and District Fire Department reminds residents to exercise caution near rivers, creeks, and other moving water. Unstable banks and rapidly changing conditions present significant hazards.

Today the Oliver Fire Department is proud to be supporting the akɬpʕas (Little Chopaka) cultural prescribed burn alongside the Lower Similkameen Indian Band, BC Wildfire Service and partner agencies.

This multi-year project uses carefully planned fire to reduce wildfire risk while helping restore and maintain the grassland and open forest ecosystems of the South Okanagan.

Two OFD firefighters and our UTV are supporting operations on the burn, while members of the WUI TREX wildfire training exchange are participating in a support and learning capacity. TREX provides a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced prescribed-fire practitioners and gain hands-on experience with firing and ignition operations, holding, fire behaviour and the planning that goes into putting good fire on the landscape.

For Oliver Fire Department, that experience comes home with us and helps build our own capacity for future prescribed burns and wildfire operations around our community.

Oliver Fire is currently participating in the 2026 Wildland Urban Interface Training Exchange(TREX) in Kelowna.

This program, which runs from September 28-October 9, partners with the BC Wildfire Service, City of Kelowna, and various organizations in BC, Alberta and California.

The focus is to provide information on prescribed burning, ignitions, holding and monitoring practices in the WUI. This TREX also plans to work alongside First Nations to understand burning practices and how prescribed burning can help to mitigate wildfire risks and rebuild and restore ecosystems.

Burn training will take place in various locations throughout the Kelowna and surrounding areas.

The TREX program is a beneficial program for the understanding and learning of prescribing burns. The Oliver Fire Department is honoured to be a participating organization as we look towards working the the Osoyoos Indian Band on future burn programs.

Stay tuned as we look forward to bring more information to you about this program and future projects.
