Supporting seniors in Area L
When I lost my father two years ago this past June, I immediately became the primary caregiver for my stepmother, who was left alone on their rural property in the Ranchettes.
In the blink of an eye, the support system she had relied on for more than 50 years was gone. She had already lost her driver’s licence after a stroke during the pandemic. Now grief and loneliness were added to her isolation.
My daily round trips of an hour and a half to check on her, take her shopping, get her to doctor’s appointments and hospital visits, and offer some comfort became our new normal. Calling it challenging would be an understatement.
Immediate assistance turned out to be a waiting list.
I give full credit to our Better at Home program for trying their best to help her. Our experience showed me there are still major gaps in support.
As her primary caregiver, I worried all the time. Many of our residents caring for someone at home know what that’s like. What if she slipped on the stairs? What if she left the stove on? And if something happened, what if the emergency room was closed?
I speak from experience!
South Cariboo Better at Home offers help with housekeeping, shopping and transportation. It is delivered locally by 100 Mile District Hospice Society, with provincial funding managed by United Way BC. Fees for some services depend on income.
As director, I will meet with seniors, caregivers and local providers to check coverage, costs and waiting lists across Area L. I will bring specific requests to Interior Health, United Way BC and the province for better access to home support and transportation.
I will also follow up on the CRD’s 100 Mile House Area FireSmart Seniors Assistance Program, intended to help residents reduce wildfire hazards on their properties when they cannot do the physical work themselves. I will monitor how it’s being delivered in Area L and how seniors can access it.
Through the CRD, I will help local groups pursue eligible grants for seniors programs they choose.
People deserve someone they can call, someone willing to get answers and someone who follows through. I will keep residents informed about what is being done and where more work is needed.
Now she is surrounded by the great folks living at Williams Lake Seniors Village and is creating her next chapter.
