Today, June 21, marks National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to recognize and celebrate the diverse cultures, traditions, languages, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.
Held on the summer solstice, this day carries deep cultural and spiritual significance for many Indigenous communities and has long been a time of gathering, celebration, and connection. As part of National Indigenous History Month, it is also an opportunity to learn about Indigenous histories and perspectives, reflect on the ongoing journey of truth and reconciliation, and honour the resilience, knowledge, and leadership of Indigenous Peoples.
The City of Orillia encourages residents to take time today to listen, learn, and celebrate the rich cultures and enduring contributions of Indigenous Peoples in our community and across Canada.
