The Intermediate Zone extends 1.5-10m (5-30ft) from your home. The goal of this zone is to reduce materials that could allow fire to spread to your house. Keep grass mowed short, and ensure trees are properly spaced and pruned to help prevent flames from spreading from one area to another. Avoid the buildup of mulch, leaves, and other combustible debris in this zone. Regular maintenance and cleanup are some of the most effective ways to help protect your home from wildfire.

The Immediate Zone is the most important area to keep free of combustible materials. To help protect your home, clean your gutters regularly and use non-combustible materials whenever possible. Maintain a 1.5m perimeter around your home that is clear of mulch, leaves, firewood, and other debris, and choose fire-resistant plants for gardens surrounding your house. Keeping this zone clean is crucial, as up to 90% of wildfires affecting residential areas are caused by embers accumulating in the Immediate Zone.

Emergency Preparedness Week | May 3–9

The Town of Oromocto, with support from the Municipal Emergency Operations Centre (MEOC) Committee, is getting ready to mark Emergency Preparedness Week and help raise awareness about being ready before an emergency happens.

Throughout the week it will be sharing simple, practical information to encourage residents to:

✅ Sign up for notifications through the Voyent Alert System and enter a draw to win a 72-hour emergency kit
✅ Learn the basics of emergency preparedness
✅ Understand what goes into a 72‑hour emergency kit
You will see Town messaging online and in‑person information tables around the community, where residents can ask questions, sign up for Voyent, and learn more about how to be prepared.

Follow along next week and take a few small steps toward being ready—it’s easier than you think.

After 37 years of dedicated service, commitment, and loyalty, Firefighter David Gamble is officially beginning a well earned new chapter, retirement.

Throughout his career, Dave was known for doing things the right way. Structured, traditional, and routine driven, he brought an old school work ethic to everything he did and firmly believed that the little things mattered. “Particular Dave,” as many knew him, took pride in looking professional at all times, uniform worn properly, tools clean, gear organized, and nothing left half-done.

A creature of habit in the best sense of the word, 7:30 a.m. meant radio check time, no exceptions. Lunch on shift was just as predictable: a can of tuna with mayonnaise and mustard, with chocolate covered almonds on the side. Dave’s consistency and attention to detail were part of what made him so dependable and trusted on shift.

A true team player, Dave was always there when you needed him, lending a hand, fixing something around the station as the go to handyman, or simply leading by example through his strong work ethic. His commitment to fitness and staying active earned him the nickname “Coach Dave,” as he was always quick to encourage others to take care of themselves.

As Firefighter Gamble begins this next chapter, we invite you to join us in wishing him a happy and well deserved retirement. Dave, may retirement bring full summers at the trailer, and just enough projects to keep you busy.

Thank you for your many years of service, dedication, and professionalism.

OFD and 911 have received many calls today regarding large volumes of smoke seen in the training area of the 5th Canadian Division Support Base, Gagetown,
Residents are reminded that this is due to the base's scheduled annual Spring Burning Program, which will run from 1 March to 18 May 2026.
