In February 2026, Calia, a beautiful 2 year old husky/malmute mix was brought in to the Victoria BC SPCA. They tested her DNA and after results showed she was 35% wolf, the SPCA leadership team decided she should be euthanized because of her genetic makeup.

This decision was made despite her being a healthy, young dog and reports she was great with staff, showed no reactivity and previously lived with another dog.

Wolf rescue groups declined to take Calia as her small wolf content made her unlikely safe in a wolf environment. The BC SPCA refused a proposal to send her to a wolf-dog rescue in Florida, claiming it was not an accredited Global Federation Animal Sanctuary, 😔

Calia had experienced adopters waiting, and staff at the Victoria branch advocating for her. Opposition to her killing was active on social media and the story was covered in news outlets.

Regardless of efforts from advocates asking the BC SPCA to reconsider, Calia was killed just a few weeks after she came to the shelter.💔 Not for any behavioural or health issues - simply because of her DNA.

Calia’s story, and the many calls for policy change that came after her death, inspire us to work for reform in the laws that govern BC animal shelters. ⚖️

Durham Regional Police have issued a new warning about “The Com,” an online network of predators targeting children. Investigators are urging parents to talk to their kids about who they’re talking to online and to watch for warning signs of exploitation. If you have information, police want to hear from you.

⚠ Durham Regional Police issued ANOTHER warning after an incident at a Pickering School!

There’s an online group called “The Com” — short for “The Community” — targeting kids as young as EIGHT years old on apps our kids use EVERY DAY: Discord, Telegram, Snapchat, Roblox, Minecraft, Twitch and Steam 😳

Police say they use grooming, manipulation, coercion and intimidation to build trust, then create secrecy through fear and shame. They pressure kids into sharing exploitative images, self-harm, making hoax 911 calls and other crimes — and enforce it with threats like doxxing and swatting.

This all follows that lockdown at William Dunbar Public School in Pickering back in January over a phone threat police believe may be linked to this same group.

What should parents watch for? Secretive use of encrypted apps, withdrawal, major mood changes, and new online “friends” your child seems unusually attached to — or afraid of.

Are your kids on these platforms? Have you had this talk yet? Let’s talk about it below — what are you doing to keep your kids safe online? 👇

UPDATE: Biscuit is home! 💙 🐇

Please help us find Biscuit.

Biscuit, a Holland Lop rabbit entered in this year's fair by a 10-year-old exhibitor, was taken from the Pet and Poultry Building at the 182nd Markham Fair during the evening of Saturday, October 3.

Biscuit is small, light ginger and white, with lopped ears and a white stripe down the face.

We're deeply disappointed that someone would take an animal from the Fair. Our exhibitors put so much time and care into raising their animals, and every one of them is part of our Fair family. We're working closely with York Regional Police, who are investigating, and we're reviewing our security to help prevent this from happening again.

If you saw anything unusual near the Pet and Poultry Building on October 3, or know where Biscuit is, please contact:

York Regional Police (non-emergency): 1-866-876-5423
Crime Stoppers (anonymous): 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)
Markham Fair Office: 905-642-3247 or [email protected]

Please share so we can bring Biscuit home. 💙

Three males are wanted following an investigation by the DRPS Financial Crimes Unit into vehicle financing fraud schemes.

Investigators determined that between Tuesday, August 1, 2023, and Wednesday, July 31, 2024, the suspects attended multiple dealerships across Durham Region and used falsified documents to obtain financing for motor vehicles.

After taking possession of the vehicles, no payments were made and the suspects fled Canada, resulting in more than $650,000 in losses. Many of the vehicles were later exported from Canada.

The following males are wanted in connection with the investigation:

• A 34-year-old male from Toronto, is wanted for: Fraud Over $5,000 x3, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime for the Purpose of Trafficking x3, and Disposing of Property to Avoid Creditors x3.

• A 60-year-old male from Toronto, is wanted for: Fraud Over $5,000 x3, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime for the Purpose of Trafficking x2, and Disposing of Property to Avoid Creditors x2.

• A 54-year-old male from Picton, is wanted for: Fraud Over $5,000 x2, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime for the Purpose of Trafficking, Disposing of Property to Avoid Creditors, and Making a False Statement to Procure a Loan.

Investigators believe this scam is linked to an organized group involved in criminal tourism.

Criminal tourism is an emerging threat that impacts communities across Canada. Offenders are entering Canada legally on tourist visas with the specific intent to commit a multitude of crimes before either fleeing the country or evading immigration officials by overstaying their legal visa periods. Offenders are often part of a larger organized criminal network whose activities can include fraud, theft, property crime, identity theft, financial scams, and other organized crime behaviours. These criminal tourists are using sophisticated methods to avoid detection, including moving between regions, using false identities, and exploiting legal loopholes.

These crimes can have a severe impact on victims who face financial losses, emotional stress, and a deep sense of violation. DRPS alongside our policing partners are working diligently to identify, disrupt and hold these offenders accountable. If you encounter suspicious activities please report it to police immediately. This information can assist to prevent further victimization and exploitation.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact D/Cst. Taylor of the Financial Crimes Unit at 905-579-1520 ext. 5283.

Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward.

The information in this media release contains facts and circumstances that have been obtained from a police investigation. These allegations have yet to be proven in court.
