Persons Day is celebrated on October 18 in Canada. It wasn't until 1929 that women were recognized as “persons” under the law. This historic decision helped advance women’s participation in public and political life, though it excluded Indigenous women and women of Asian heritage and descent.
Today, Persons Day is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made toward gender equality and recognize the work that still remains.

This year, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty puts the focus on Safe Homes for All.
In 2026, it calls for action in three key areas: making safe housing a human rights priority, designing policies together with people experiencing poverty, and mobilizing resources to ensure safe homes for all.
Let’s take an opportunity to reflect on access to safe, adequate housing around the world.

Today, we celebrate World Food Day. This year’s theme, “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow,” invites us to reflect on how food reaches communities and, importantly, how innovation can help ensure access to nutritious food for everyone.

Days like today give us an opportunity to look beyond how food is distributed and explore new ideas, solutions, and approaches to help build a more sustainable future for communities around the world.

Books are rarely banned in Canada, but they are often challenged. Last year however, 360 books were removed from school libraries in Alberta, making it the largest book ban in Canadian history. And the number of books challenged last year nearly tripled from 2024.
Books that have been challenged include "The Testaments" by Margaret Atwood, "Looking for Alaska" by John Green, "Mockingjay" by Suzanne Collins, "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire, "Red, White & Royal Blue" by Casey McQuiston, and "Slaughterhouse-Five" by Kurt Vonnegut.
The reasons why they have been challenged and/or banned are often similar: for being sexually explicit, or for violence, profanity or dark themes.

Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice is a post-apocalyptic novel of Indigenous resilience, set in a small northern Ontario Anishinaabe community just before winter arrives, when everything suddenly goes dark.

Sound interesting? It is the next book for our upcoming book club meeting at the Library in Charles Hall. Copies of the book are available to borrow when you register, thanks to a partnership with Public Library!
