Passing of a former Commanding Officer

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Lieutenant Colonel Dan Matthews, OStJ CD on Friday, July 17, 2026.

LCol Matthews began his military career with the Ontario Regiment (RCAC), where he rose through the ranks to be the first in the Regiment’s history to serve as the Regimental Sergeant Major and then later as the Commanding Officer. After leaving the Ontario Regiment, LCol Matthews transferred to the Cadet Instructors Cadre and was appointed as the Commanding Officer of 1913. Following his tenure as the 1913 CO, LCol Matthews went on to serve as the DCO and acting CO of the Blackdown Cadet Training Centre, and then as the Regional Administration Officer at the Regional Cadet Support Unit (Central).

Following his retirement from military service, LCol Matthews went on to volunteer with the Army Cadet League of Canada, eventually serving as the President of the Ontario Branch.

LCol Matthews leadership, mentorship and friendship to literally thousands of soldiers, officers and cadets has left a lasting mark on us all.

Please keep LCol Matthews family and friends in your thoughts during this difficult time. Rest easy sir. You will be missed.
