WATCH: Canada and Europe: An Ambitious Future

Ambassador Concannon was a guest on CTV News Power Play with Vassy Kapelos joined by German Ambassador Matthias Lüttenberg, to discuss a big week for Canada & Europe, following President Ursula von der Leyen’s State of the Union address & Prime Minister Mark Carney’s landmark address to the European Parliament.

Particularly timely as Ireland currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. ..
At a time of profound geopolitical change, Canada is emerging as a very consequential global voice, and there is now real momentum behind an even stronger partnership between Europe and Canada.

Ireland is at the heart of that relationship. We are Canada’s 8th largest investor, Irish companies employ over 32,000 people in Canada, and Ireland is the European home to more than 100 large scale Canadian companies.

For Ireland, these relationships run deep. Our EU membership has been transformational, and our ties with Canada are rooted in centuries of shared history, shared values, and a strong dynamic modern partnership.

🇮🇪🇪🇺🇨🇦 The Embassy of Ireland to Canada was delighted to host a special reception to mark Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union (July–December 2026).

We were honoured to welcome leaders from across Canadian public life, the diplomatic corps, business, culture and the Irish diaspora to celebrate Ireland’s Presidency.

A highlight of the evening was a beautiful performance of Ode to Joy by the “Note Verbale” EU Ambassadors’ Choir, accompanied by a string quartet of students from Deanna McDougall School of Music, all studying at the Royal Conservatory of Music. Their performance marked the launch of a special initiative that will see the music of Ode to Joy shared with music schools across Canada, encouraging young musicians nationwide to learn and perform it in celebration of Ireland’s Presidency.

Guests also enjoyed wonderful performances by Dan Dunlop and his band, together with talented traditional Irish musicians from Comhaltas Ottawa, making for an evening of friendship, culture and conversation.

Ireland’s Presidency will focus on three key priorities: Competitiveness, Values and Security, under the guiding spirit of “Ní neart go cur le chéile” — There is no strength without unity.

Huge thank you to Prime Minister Mark Carney! 🇨🇦🇮🇪

This week, Ambassador John Concannon met with the Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney to follow up on his hugely successful visit to Ireland and, in particular, to discuss implementation of the ‘Canada Ireland Partnership’ agreed on with the Taoiseach.

The ‘Canada Ireland Partnership’ sets out a practical programme of cooperation across trade and investment, innovation, energy, health, culture and Canada-EU engagement, building on the deep ties between our two countries and our shared commitment to working together on the opportunities and challenges ahead.

At the end of the meeting Ambassador Concannon was delighted to present the Prime Minister with a framed copy of ‘Aghagower to Canada’, the story of the Carney family prepared by the Westport Historical Society, as a small token marking his homecoming visit to Ireland.
