International Day of the World’s Indigenous People
On August 9, the Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC) marks the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples by recognizing and celebrating the cultures, languages, knowledge systems, legal traditions, resilience and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in Canada, and Indigenous Peoples around the world.
For the PPSC, this day is also an opportunity for reflection and action. Our mission to serve the public interest and help make Canada a safe and just society includes contributing to the change necessary to support a criminal justice system that is equitable and fair to all. This responsibility is reflected in our values of respect, trust, courage, equity and inclusion, and commitment to truth and reconciliation.
Reconciliation requires more than recognition on a single day. It requires sustained listening, learning, accountability and the development of meaningful relationships with Indigenous Peoples and communities. The PPSC remains committed to confronting systemic discrimination, understanding the lived realities of Indigenous Peoples and helping build a justice system in which Indigenous voices, rights, cultures and legal traditions are respected.
