📢 Mental Health Risk 2-Weekend Camp for High School Students 📢

RISC Foundation, in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yukon and BYTE – Empowering Youth, is pleased to offer a fully virtual Mental Health Risk Camp for students in Grades 8–12.

Across two weekends, students will explore mental health risk, digital literacy and social media impacts, peer support, coping strategies, and available community resources.

📅 Weekend 1: November 21–22, 2026
📅 Weekend 2: November 28–29, 2026
🕙 Time: 10:00 AM–3:30 PM PST
💻 Location: Fully virtual
💲 Cost: CAD $125 + HST
🎓 Scholarships available for equity-seeking students

Students will also have opportunities to qualify for paid internships, university and industry visits, and other rewards.

Discovering new materials is key to building stronger infrastructure, cleaner energy, and better technology. Yet, figuring out how materials work isn’t easy—scientists can spend a lot of time analyzing complex data from tools like synchrotron X-ray .

Researchers with the University of Toronto and the Acceleration Consortium want to change that. By using artificial intelligence, they are creating a “self-driving lab” that can quickly turn raw data into clear insights about a material’s structure and properties—in real time. This means faster decisions, smarter experiments, and better use of beamtime.

The impact could be wide-reaching. New corrosion-resistant materials could help protect bridges, vehicles, and everyday products, reducing costs and environmental damage. Improved catalysts could lower the cost of producing clean energy, supporting a more sustainable future.

By combining with materials science, this approach might speed up discoveries.

Members of the research team include Jason Hattrick-Simpers, Daniel Persaud, and Luke Menezes with UofT Materials Science and Engineering. This study is funded by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and Mitacs.

🌎 Can we turn carbon dioxide into useful fuels—and keep the technology stable enough to work long term?

Researchers at the University of Alberta are studying copper-based materials that can convert into valuable chemicals using sunlight. While promising, these materials tend to break down over time, limiting their real-world application.

Using advanced analyses at the CLS, the team is tracking exactly how and why this breakdown happens—right as the reaction is taking place. By comparing different material designs, they aim to find ways to improve stability and overall performance.

This work could help turn CO₂, a major driver of , into a valuable resource—supporting clean energy solutions and a more balanced carbon cycle. ♻️

This research is led by Prof. Xiaolei Wang and Dr. Yicheng Wang, his former PhD student and current postdoctoral fellow. Faculty of Engineering, University of Alberta
