Earlier today in Whitehorse, the Honourable Marjorie Michel, Minister of Health, announced a $2.4 million investment to establish a new Network Environments for Indigenous Health Research (NEIHR) centre in Yukon. This centre will strengthen Yukon First Nations-led research capacity in the territory and expand a national network of Indigenous health research centres to all provinces and territories.

Led by Dr. Norma Ann Shorty at the Institute for Circumpolar Health Research, the centre will provide long-term support for research that is grounded in Yukon First Nations governance, knowledge systems, culture and approaches to health and wellness.

When Ryan Hooey was 27 years old, he lost his vision due to diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of blindness in Canada. Now, Ryan works alongside researchers like Dr. Valeria Rac to improve access to screening, saving sight and health care dollars.

In fact, for every $1 invested in screening, $27 is returned to the health care system by way of averted costs.

Memorial students Lucas Fowler, Haley Adams, Thomas O’Brien, Evan Natsheh and Allison Spurrell from the Faculty of Science are gaining hands-on research experience while helping advance important discoveries in environmental health.

Working alongside Dr. Lindsay Cahill and Dr. Ashlyn Swift-Gallant, the students are part of a CIHR-funded project exploring how micro and nanoplastics may affect pregnancy and early development.

UBC researchers have discovered a hidden cleanup system in the eye that could transform how we understand and treat leading causes of blindness.

For decades, scientists didn't know how the eye clears the fluid, waste and inflammatory debris linked to diseases like glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.

Now, they've identified a previously unknown lymphatic network responsible for draining this waste. The foundational discovery opens new possibilities for understanding vision loss and could one day lead to therapies that improve fluid clearance or deliver drugs more effectively to the back of the eye.

“The question now is: How can we enhance or exploit this cleanup system to treat or even prevent disease?” said Dr. Neeru Gupta.
