Before last night’s debate on housing and homelessness, we gave Ottawa mayoral candidates one challenge: please speak to what the city CAN do to address this crisis.

Because ending homelessness is possible. There are solutions we can pursue locally and some that we already are.

In 90 minutes, you can hear from Alex Lawson, Jeff Leiper, Neil Saravanamuttoo and Mark Sutcliffe on how they would:

- Prioritize deeply affordable housing & protect what we already have
- Address food insecurity and inadequate income supports
- Respond to encampments and unsheltered homelessness with sustainable solutions
- Help people experiencing homelessness stay safe this winter
- Meaningfully engage people with lived experience
- Build a more coordinated, sustainable and effective housing & homelessness system in Ottawa
- Respond to Indigenous homelessness
- Address neighbourhood division over affordable and supportive housing developments

Watch the full debate at https://rogerstv.com/homelessnessmayoral2026 and make housing and homelessness one of your ballot-box priorities this election.

The more you learn and engage, the greater the momentum to create a city where everyone has a home.

Thank you to everyone who made this critical conversation possible and all four candidates for participating (+ photo credits to Alex Ottawa Food Bank 📷)

23 fundraising non-profits. All doing life-changing work to provide housing solutions and vital homelessness services in our community. 🏡

At the Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa, we set a goal of raising $30,000 for our member organizations through the second annual Race to End Homelessness.

The finish line is technically behind us after a beautiful race day with almost 350 runners — all housing and homelessness changemakers in their own right — bringing us to 81% of our fundraising goal ($24,345 raised!). 🏃🏃‍♀️

We still have until end-of-day Tuesday Oct. 6 to make it over the top. You can donate directly to any of our fundraising member organizations (the $30,000 target is a shared total) through the 2026 Race to End Homelessness website:
https://lnkd.in/ehqqBBpi

Every additional dollar means more capacity at organizations that are the experts at what they do—bringing us closer to a future where everyone in Ottawa has a home. 💛

Since this week’s exciting federal government announcement of $1.5 billion for an affordable housing acquisition fund, we’ve seen some good questions about what acquisition actually means for our neighbourhoods.

Our city loses 31 units of affordable private market housing for every 1 new unit being built. Tenants are often evicted because their building has been sold and will be redeveloped to rent at a much higher rate. Stopping the loss of affordable housing is as critical to ending the housing crisis as building new.

Instead of losing an already affordable unit to renoviction or redevelopment when a building is sold, acquisition funds allow non-profit housing organizations to buy these buildings, keep them affordable long-term, and ensure that tenants stay in their housing.

For more on why acquisition is key to preserving the neighbourhoods we love, we’re re-sharing a video we created back in 2022 as part of last municipal election’s Starts With Home campaign.

Four years later, we are so encouraged to see the support for acquisition picking up across all levels of government.

Every home saved = a win for our neighbourhoods + affordability in Ottawa. 🏡 🏢 💛
