To all security officers on duty right now—standing guard in places where few would choose to be, during hours when most are off the clock, facing challenges that many will never encounter.

You are the first line of defense, the steady presence amid turmoil. You step up when others step back.

Your contributions often go unnoticed, and your critical decisions are made in a heartbeat. The scenarios you manage would overwhelm many, but not you.

Today, we want to express our gratitude.

Not just for your actions in the moment, but for the professionalism you exhibit during every shift. For maintaining high standards even when no one is watching. For showing up, day after day, to perform a role that holds more significance than most will ever realize.

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and I’m genuinely curious where everyone stands.

Should a police officer be teaching control tactics without a legitimate, pressure tested grappling or striking background?

Before everyone jumps in, hear me out.

This isn’t me saying every instructor needs to be a world champion or have a closet full of medals. It’s also not saying fitness and police experience don’t matter. They absolutely do.

But passing a PT test, running a fast mile, benching a lot of weight, or having years on the street doesn’t automatically mean someone knows how to control a resisting person or teach others to do it effectively.

There is a reason we expect fi****ms instructors to be highly proficient with fi****ms. Shouldn’t we expect control tactics instructors to have regularly pressure tested their techniques against resisting opponents?

When I say pressure tested, I’m talking about backgrounds like Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Sambo, Catch Wrestling, Boxing, Muay Thai, or another discipline where techniques are consistently tested against people who are actively trying to stop you.

Street experience matters.

Fitness matters.

Instructor certifications matter.

My question is whether those things alone are enough to qualify someone to teach officers how to control resisting suspects.

I know this one is going to divide people, and that’s okay. Keep it respectful.
