The World Federalist Movement - Canada (WFMC) promotes global governance that is democratically accountable and based on the rule of law. WFMC, as part of the international World Federalist Movement, works to increase global economic and legal justice, and ecological sustainability. Federalism is a way for political communities – local, regional, national or international – to act together on matters of common concern, while retaining their identities and legitimate rights.

🕊️ Peace was one of the clearest messages to emerge from UNGA81.

Across the General Debate, peace and its forms were mentioned 1,742 times, with 190 of 194 delegations using the word in their statements.

But peace takes more than words.

It requires prevention, diplomacy, dialogue, respect for international law, and a commitment to resolving our differences without resorting to violence.

As Dr. Khalilur Rahman, President of the 81st UN General Assembly recently reminded us:

“Peace must be built. And it is our shared responsibility to build it.”

On this International Day of Non-Violence, may those words challenge us to turn our shared aspiration for peace into action. 🕊️

Orange Shirt Day did not begin as a government initiative. It began as a grassroots movement.
First observed in 2013, it grew through the work of Survivors, Indigenous communities, educators, advocates, and people committed to ensuring that the history and legacy of Canada’s residential school system would not be forgotten.
Over time, that movement helped bring September 30 into the national consciousness. In 2021, the federal government established the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The history behind September 30 is therefore also a story about the power of people to create change: a community-led movement that grew, reached institutions across the country, and ultimately received formal national recognition.

When Phyllis Webstad was six years old, her grandmother bought her a new orange shirt to wear on her first day at St. Joseph Mission Residential School.
When she arrived at the school, the shirt was taken from her.
Decades later, Phyllis shared her story. Her experience inspired Orange Shirt Day and helped give rise to a message now recognized across Canada: Every Child Matters.
On September 30, we remember that the history of residential schools is made up of the experiences of thousands of children whose identities, cultures, languages, and connections to their families and communities were deliberately disrupted.
Today, we honour Phyllis and the Survivors who have shared their stories. We remember the children who never returned home, and we recognize our responsibility to listen, learn, and carry these truths forward.

Today, on Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour Residential School Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the lasting impacts of the residential school system on First Nations, Inuit and Métis families and communities.

Orange Shirt Day was inspired by the experience of Survivor Phyllis Webstad, whose new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at residential school when she was six years old. Her story helped inspire a movement centred on remembrance, education and reconciliation.

Reconciliation begins with truth, but it cannot end with acknowledgement. It asks us to listen, to learn, and to carry that understanding into sustained action.

Today, we encourage our community to make space for the voices and experiences of Survivors and Indigenous Peoples, and to continue learning beyond September 30.

We are proud to honour Judge Kimberly Prost as the recipient of WFM-Canada’s 2026 World Peace Award.

Throughout a distinguished career in international law and public service, Judge Prost has worked at the forefront of international justice; advancing accountability, strengthening institutions that protect human rights, and upholding the rule of law.

Her service has included senior roles within the United Nations and international criminal justice institutions, as well as her work as a Judge of the International Criminal Court.

On Saturday, September 26th WFM-Canada will recognize Judge Prost’s remarkable contribution to international justice and peace during our 2026 Annual Members Meeting.

Judge Prost will join us live from The Hague, Netherlands, where WFM-Canada Executive Committee Chair Christine Jacobs will present her with the World Peace Award.

Pearson, international jurist Louise Arbour, humanitarian and retired Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire, former Minister of Foreign Affairs Lloyd Axworthy, and Indigenous leader and former Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Murray Sinclair.

Their contributions span generations and fields, but share a common commitment: strengthening the institutions, principles and cooperation needed to build a more peaceful and just world.
