The Embassy of Ukraine in Canada warmly invites everyone to join us for a Flag Raising Ceremony at Ottawa City Hall, marking the Day of the National Flag of Ukraine (August 23), and the 35th Anniversary of the restoration of Ukraine’s Independence (August 24).

For Ukrainians, our blue and yellow flag and our Independence are inseparable. 35 years ago, Ukraine restored its place among the world’s independent nations. Today, Ukrainians are once again defending our Independence and Freedom and the right to raise our flag over every Ukrainian city against Russia’s ongoing brutal full-scale armed aggression.

There is special meaning in raising our flag here in Canada - the first Western country to recognize Ukraine’s independence in 1991, and a country that has stood firmly with Ukraine throughout the most difficult years of our modern history.

We invite Ukrainians across Ottawa, our Canadian friends and partners, and everyone who stands with Ukraine to join us for this special moment.

Bring your Ukrainian flags, vyshyvankas, and blue and yellow colours, and let us mark these two important days together. 🇺🇦🇨🇦

It may be hard to comprehend what 975 years means. Not just the changing of seasons, but generations of people, societies, technologies and even empires coming and going.

Yet some places have stood through it all – and today, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra marks its 975th anniversary.

Established in 1051, the Lavra is a Christian sacred site and a witness to the continuity of Ukraine’s history and tradition of statehood. Over the centuries, it became a centre of chronicle writing, book printing, theological thought, education, medicine, architecture, icon painting, engraving, music and the arts.

It was part of the European and Byzantine world long before the emergence of the Russian imperial tradition, which later sought to appropriate and erase its Ukrainian heritage. Restoring the Ukrainian voice of the Lavra today means restoring these historical connections — from its founders, Anthony and Theodosius, to the princes, hetmans, scholars, artists, benefactors, museum professionals and restorers who shaped and preserved it across the centuries.

Yet this nearly thousand-year-old complex, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, is still endangered today by Russia’s war against Ukraine. On 15 June 2026, during a massive Russian attack on Kyiv, a strike drone deliberately hit the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, damaging around 80% of its roof.

After 975 years, the Lavra’s history is a powerful reminder of why it must be protected – as a part of Ukraine’s national memory and of the world’s shared cultural heritage.

🧩 The Puzzle of Unity series continues with another story from Ukraine’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Today, we share more about Kosiv painted ceramics.

Kosiv ceramics represent Ukrainian folk art from the Carpathians, with a tradition dating back at least to the 18th century. Scenes of everyday life – work, celebrations, and leisure – are hand-engraved with a metal stylus on raw clay and then painted with enamels and glaze.

In 2019, Kosiv painted ceramics were inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, affirming their status as one of the most vivid symbols of Ukraine’s cultural heritage.
Short fact: Only three traditional colours dominate Kosiv jugs, plates, and stove tiles: yellow, green, and brown, inspired by the Carpathian nature.

🧩 The series is back with more stories about cultural and historical symbols of Ukraine. Today, we share more about Hryhorii Skovoroda – a philosopher, a poet, and a prominent representative of the Ukrainian Baroque.

In the 1740s, Skovoroda travelled across Europe, visiting Budapest, Vienna, Pressburg (Bratislava), and other cities, engaging with science and culture – experiences that shaped his worldview. The philosopher taught that happiness comes from finding work and a way of life that brings inner fulfilment rather than material wealth.

Hryhorii Skovoroda spent the last year of his life in the village that was later renamed Skovorodynivka, in the Kharkiv region. A museum dedicated to his life and work welcomed visitors there – until 2022, when Russian forces struck the museum, deliberately causing significant damage to Ukraine’s cultural heritage.

Short fact: Before his death, Skovoroda asked that the words "The world tried to catch me, but did not succeed" be written on his grave. They became one of his most famous quotes.

Russia’s missiles are not the Kremlin’s only weapons. It also systematically uses sport to advance its agenda and propaganda, whitewash its image, and weaken international pressure.

As long as Russia wages its war of aggression and commits daily war crimes against Ukraine, there are no grounds for easing its isolation.

The IOC’s decision to temporarily restore the rights of the Russian Olympic Committee is both premature and unjustified. Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine have formally appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). International pressure on Russia must increase, not weaken.

Russia has no place in international sport while its war and terror continue.

Russia's attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region has killed at least 17 people and injured 44.

On the night of August 5, Russia launched 24 ballistic missiles, four Zircon/Oniks missiles, and 115 drones, many of them jet-powered. The main targets were civilian businesses, including warehouses, a brewing company, logistics facilities, infrastructure, and a railway station.

Ballistic missile interceptors could have saved these lives. Delays in providing them, or reluctance to supply them, come at a devastating human cost.

Pressure on Russia must increase – in particular through stronger sanctions on Russia's missile production. The G7, the EU, and all partners who stand for the protection of life must act decisively.

Міністерство закордонних справ України, Укрзалізниця та Міністерство розвитку громад та територій України продовжують до 10 серпня реєстрацію учасників на шостий етап проєкту "Залізна Зміна", мета якого – оздоровлення та психологічна підтримка українських дітей, підтримка талановитої молоді України у поєднанні з патріотичним вихованням.

З моменту заснування у 2022 році проєкт "Залізна Зміна" об’єднав понад 9 700 українських підлітків, ставши однією з найбільших молодіжних ініціатив в Україні, спрямованих на формування свідомого та активного покоління.

Шостий міжнародний саміт обʼєднає понад 200 українських дітей. Проєкт передбачає участь дітей, які у звʼязку з російською збройною агресією були змушені виїхати за кордон, та тих, хто від початку повномасштабної війни перебуває в Україні.

Запрошуємо українських дітей віком від 14 до 16 років, які тимчасово проживають у Канаді реєструватися для участі у міжнародному саміті "Залізна Зміна"!

Окрім цього, передбачені спортивні активності, походи в гори та знайомство з культурною спадщиною України.

Участь у Саміті безоплатна. Покриття витрат учасникам проєкту починається із зустрічі в одному з хабів: Варшава (Польща), Будапешт (Угорщина) та закінчується по поверненню учасників до одного із зазначених хабів.

🧩 The Puzzle of Unity series continues with another story from Ukraine’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Today, we share more about Kazymyr Malevych.

The artist was born in Kyiv in 1879. He taught for several years at the Kyiv Art Institute and became a leading figure of the Ukrainian artistic avant-garde, founding his own schools of painting and architecture.

Malevych created Suprematism – an art movement that completely rejected the depiction of real objects in favour of compositions based on geometric forms. Black Square is among the most famous works created by the artist. He also occasionally turned to figurative subjects, as in Sportsmen.

Short fact: for decades, Malevych was labelled as a "Russian" artist in museums worldwide, along with many others whose heritage Russia has sought to appropriate. Today, however, institutions such as Amsterdam's Stedelijk Museum have begun correcting the record, recognising him as a Ukrainian.
