The morning of August 19, 1942, dawned with nearly 5,000 Canadian troops bravely hitting the beaches of Dieppe as part of Operation JUBILEE.

The large raid was designed to strike back against German forces occupying France, as well as assess the Allies’ amphibious attack abilities. However, fortified cliffs and an alerted German force awaited the troops, resulting in heavy casualties. Over 900 Canadian soldiers lost their lives, and the Royal Canadian Air Force lost 13 aircraft.
Despite these losses, valuable lessons were learned from the operation. The successful Normandy landings were carried out two years later with increased naval support, aerial dominance, and heavy firepower.

84 years later, we remember the courage and sacrifices made by the soldiers.

Every second matters when someone is seriously injured. This summer, Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Combat Medics are training at the Connaught Ranges to improve how we deal with casualties that require blood transfusions.

This isn’t just training; it’s a major evolution in how we prepare medical personnel to care for casualties in operational environments.

Now, instead of casualties receiving transfusions after reaching a deployed field hospital, they will receive life-saving blood immediately in the operational field where possible.

This important training will make sure our medics stay ready for all situations in a field that provides care when it matters the most.

On this day in 1945, the Second World War officially came to an end.

Victory over Japan (V-J Day) brought immense relief to Canadians and people across the Allied nations. It also marked the beginning of the journey home for the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who had served around the world as the war in the Pacific and the final chapter of the Second World War came to a close.

Today, we honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who served through six arduous years of war in both the Pacific and Europe. We remember those who gave so much in the pursuit of peace and freedom.

History was made in 1941 when the Canadian Women’s Army Corps (CWAC) was founded in response to anticipated manpower shortages.

With the motto “We serve that men may fight,” women took on roles including as office personnel, dental and medical technicians, telephone operators, vehicle maintenance workers, and performed ciphering and decoding duties.

Overall, 21,624 women served in the CWAC in Canada and overseas, including in Britain, Northwest Europe, and Italy.

Today, women are an integral part of the Canadian Armed Forces and are represented in all fields and careers.

We thank the women of the CWAC for their service and for helping lead the way for more women to join the forces. 🫡
