I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Barbados’ National Hero, The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers.

Sir Garfield was recognized by cricketing nations around the world as the greatest all-rounder of all time.

As a schoolboy, I witnessed his outstanding performance at Kensington Oval, where he played fearlessly against the English fast bowler John Snow.

Sir Garfield was an outstanding citizen and a true son of the soil. He was kind, humble, hardworking, and deeply committed to excellence. He represented Barbados with distinction and inspired generations through both his achievements and his character. He was truly a legend of his time.

I extend my sincere condolences to his family, friends and to all those whom he inspired.

May he rest in eternal peace.
