Canada and Denmark enjoy a strong and growing trade relationship, supported by the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). Since Denmark ratified CETA in 2017, the agreement has reduced trade barriers, improved market access, and created new opportunities for businesses and investment. Today the two countries cooperate closely in areas such as clean energy, life sciences, digital technologies, defence, and resilient supply chains.🇩🇰🇨🇦🇪🇺

In 2024, bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Denmark reached approximately CAD 2.7 billion, reflecting the close economic partnership between the two countries.

Danish immigration has played an important role in the ties between Denmark and Canada. Today around 200 000 Canadians have Danish roots, with Danish communities found across all provinces and territories.

Danish immigration to Canada took place in several major waves: from the late 1880s to 1914, again during the 1920s, and especially in the decades after the Second World War. The peak year was 1957 when 7,790 Danes immigrated to Canada, more than in any other year.

From New Denmark in New Brunswick to Danish settlements in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and British Columbia, Danish immigrants have helped build communities, farms, churches, schools and local businesses across Canada.

February 2026 marked another milestone in Danish-Canadian relations.

Canada and the Kingdom of Denmark signed a Defence Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to deepen cooperation on defence innovation, logistics, military exercises and industrial collaboration.

The same month, Canada opened a Consulate in Nuuk, Greenland, highlighting the strategic importance of the Arctic and the close partnership between the two countries.

🎉Góða Ólavsøku/Happy Ólavsøka! Today is the National Day of the Faroe Islands.

The Faroe Islands is an archipelago of 18 mountainous islands in the North Atlantic and is a self-governing country within The Kingdom of Denmark.🇫🇴🇩🇰🇬🇱

Did you know that Ólavsøka marks the yearly opening of the Faroese Parliament Løgtingið, which is thought to be one of the oldest Parliaments in the world, dating back to around year 800?

We wish the Faroe Islands a happy celebration.

Ever wondered what living underground in a bunker would be like? 🥶🇨🇦 Over the weekend, Ambassador Harris and embassy staff had the chance to find out, meeting with Executive Director Monique Goffinet for a tour of Canada’s Cold War Museum, . is a four-storey underground nuclear bunker built between 1959 and 1961 during the Cold War to shelter 535 people, including key political and military leaders, in the event of a nuclear attack. was decommissioned as a military base in 1994 and reopened as a non-profit museum in 1998. The “Whisky War” over Hans Island (Tartupaluk) became known for its lighthearted nature. For many years Danish and Canadian patrols would take turns leaving a bottle of schnapps or whisky and their national flag on the island, symbolising each country's claim to the island. 🥃

On 14 June 2022, Canada and the Kingdom of Denmark signed a comprehensive boundary agreement, peacefully settling the sovereignty question over Hans Island and establishing a modernized maritime boundary stretching 3,962 km from the Lincoln Sea to the Labrador Sea. It is the world’s largest maritime border. ⚓

On September 19, 1996 in Ottawa, the Arctic Council was established as a high-level intergovernmental forum to enhance cooperation, coordination and interaction among the Arctic States with the active involvement of Arctic Indigenous Peoples and other Arctic inhabitants on common Arctic issues.

In 2008, Canada and the Kingdom of Denmark joined the other Arctic coastal states in signing the Ilulissat Declaration, establishing sovereign rights, joint regional efforts and responsibilities, and committing to the peaceful resolution of Arctic disputes through dialogue and international law. The declaration also led to the establishment of a bilateral working group that helped pave the way for the 2022 agreement resolving the sovereignty dispute over Hans Island (Tartupaluk).

Glass – In Sweden when you say you would like “glass” from a kiosk you will get ice cream. But in Denmark or Norway it means glass, same as in English. However if you spell it “glas” in Swedish it means the same as glass in English. Only it sounds different phonetically.
