Travel ads are everywhere these days—and with summer vacation season upon us, that’s hardly a surprise. Visit this, rent that, fly here... you know the drill.

These kinds of things have been around for a while, and there’s a certain charm to vintage adverts, harkening back to a bygone era with their colourful depictions of choice destinations.

Since the late 19th century, Canadian governments and transportation companies—especially railways—have been promoting Canada to both Canadians and international visitors through bold, eye-catching posters designed to sell a vision of the country.

These posters range in message and intent: some encourage safe and responsible travel, others portray Canada as a place of opportunity for immigrants, as an untouched landscape of natural beauty for tourists, or as an endless frontier for wilderness adventure.

If your destination is learning more about the Marc Choko collection (from which some of these images are from), check out our blog! https://thediscoverblog.com/2022/03/31/travel-posters-in-the-marc-choko-collection-a-co-lab-challenge/

Our Project Naming initiative helps identify Indigenous individuals in photographs from the national collection. Many of these images were taken without recording the people’s names, and Project Naming aims to restore their identities, enriching the collections with accurate information.

This National Indigenous History Month, our third edition of Finding Kin, highlighting the community of Igluligaarjuk (Chesterfield Inlet), runs June 8–29.

You can help by sharing these posts with anyone who may have knowledge of people living in this area.

Follow our Project Naming Facebook account for more information and contribute to this project!

It was on this day in 1944, that final preparations began for what would be known as “D-Day.”

The following morning, June 6, 1944, Canadian Forces landed on Juno Beach, one of several Allied landing sites on the northern coast of France. This was the start of the liberation of France and the retaking of Europe from N**i control.
