Parkdale Food Centre The Parkdale Food Centre is a community food centre serving Neighbours in Hintonburg, Mechanicsville

The Parkdale Food Centre offers food support to residents of the community who are experiencing food insecurity. We are challenging the notion that people living in poverty should be grateful for food cast-offs. We're offering sit-down community meals, cooking workshops, and more food options. We are working hard to create a more welcoming, inclusive atmosphere where everyone is valued and respected. Forming strong community partnerships is a vital component of the work we do as we move forward.

Most food insecurity programs assume the barrier is access, but research shows something else: People often don’t go because they feel:

- Embarrassed
- Judged
- Like they don’t deserve help

The data on shame, as reported by Food Banks Canada:
54% of respondents feel ashamed about accessing a food bank
46% feel that others need it more
41% of respondents feeling unwelcome or judged for accessing a food bank

“ Food access is currently a system problem, and we as a society need to alter the thinking around this. The stigma, anxiety and embarrassment of not having the means to provide for yourself or your family needs to change.” - Foodbanks Canada

At Parkdale, we do our part to address and unpack shame, by curating and emphasizing a safe and welcoming environment for all Neighbours wherever they are at in their journey. We do this through making an easy intake process at Mino'Weesini, having a friendly staff support folks shopping and not having means testing for folks beyond being in our catchment area to get support.

We also offer wraparound support through the Support Spot, and connection during our community meals! Food insecurity is hard enough to navigate, we can all do our part to reduce the shame of it too!

Today is World Food Day,

We we're able to sit down with Carissa, our Community Advocacy Coordinator to get the scoop on meal trends.

She shares, that the need for nourishing food and meals continues is on the rise. In 2025, we served an average of 1,117 breakfasts and lunches each month. In 2026, that average has climbed to 1,228 meals per month, and we’ve already served more than 1,400 meals in two months this year.

Behind every meal is a person, a family, and a community that deserves to be nourished. Food security is something we build together, and every action counts.

This World Food Day, us at the Parkdale Food Centre and Carissa are asking folks for support;

This could be a financial gift to Parkdale Food Centre.

Volunteering your time and be part of the work.

Check out the resources on our website, and advocate for better food security in Ottawa and help make access to good food a priority, especially since we have an election coming up on October 26th!

Together, we can build a community where everyone has access to the food they need to thrive.

Heya Neighbours! We're hoping you can spare a little extra, so that it can make a big difference. Our Meal Into Two campaign is all about coming together to help support families in our community.

Join us in spreading kindness and sharing the warmth of a meal. Think about that: Your $25 can become 50$ your $50 can become a $100, together we can turn $15,000 into $30,000 worth of wraparound support for our Neighbours who need it the most. So this thanksgiving, let’s make sure more families have something to be thankful for.

Food access starts long before someone visits a food bank.

Infrastructure and government support, investment and development matters. It is not the pricing alone. It’s where food is located. If the closest grocery store is kilometers away, if you don’t own a car. If public transit takes an hour.. Health food becomes much harder to access. This is what many people experience in food desserts. Access isn’t only about having food available it’s about being able to reach it.

Sometimes, improving food access starts just around the corner
