Leopold “Jim” Šťastný’s legacy continues to bring Slovakia, Austria and Canada together. 🇸🇰🇦🇹🇨🇦⚽️

This week in Ottawa, two events at the and the Embassy of the Slovak Republic honoured Leopold “Jim” Šťastný, the legendary Jewish soccer player and soccer coach. Through an exhibition and a lectues we explored his remarkable life, sporting achievements and enduring legacy of his resilience.

🎙️ Michal Vaněk, Director of the SNM - Museum of Jewish Culture, presented Šťastný’s story and the historical context of his life, part of the history while introducing the work of the museum and the Museum of the Holocaust in Sereď.

🤝 The event at the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Ottawa began with warm welcoming remarks from Viera Grigová, Ambassador of Slovakia to Canada, Andreas Rendl Ambassador of Austria to Canada and Dominique Reill, Director of the Wirth Institute of Austrian and Central European Studies at the University of Alberta.

❤️ ❤️ One of the most moving moments was seeing several generations of the Šťastný family reunite at the Slovak Embassy in Ottawa after more than 40 years.

🖼️ The travelling exhibition dedicated to Leopold Šťastný has already visited Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton and will open to the public at the University of Ottawa in late October.

We would like to thank Michal Vaňko, Dominique Reill of the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies at the University of Alberta, Austria in Canada, Professor Roman Krakovský of the Department of Slovak and Central European Studies at the uOttawa and all our partners and participants for their help in commemorating a figure whose legacy continues to bring together sport, history, family stories, and cultural memory.

🤝 Prednášku na Veľvyslanectve SR v Ottawe otvorili príhovormi veľvyslankyňa SR Viera Grigová, veľvyslanec Rakúskej republiky Andreas Rendl a Dominique Reill, riaditeľka Wirth Institute of Austrian and Central European Studies at the University of Alberta.

🖼️ Príbeh Leopolda Šťastného približuje putovná výstava, ktorá bude koncom októbra sprístupnená verejnosti na University of Ottawa a ktorú už mohli vidieť návštevníci vo viacerých mestách Kanady – Vancouveri, Calgary a Edmontone.

Ďakujeme Michalovi Vaňkovi, Dominique Reill z Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies at the University of Alberta, Austria in Canada, profesorovi Romanovi Krakovskému z Katedry slovenských a stredoeurópskych štúdií uOttawa a všetkým partnerom a účastníkom za pomoc pri pripomínaní osobnosti, ktorej odkaz dodnes spája šport, históriu, rodinné príbehy a kultúrnu pamäť.

🇸🇰🇨🇦 Last week Ambassador Viera Grigová visited Saskatchewan on a Diplomatic Economic Mission organised by Canada’s Foreign Policy—Global Affairs Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan. 🤝

Group of more than 20 Ambassadors and High Commissioners based in Ottawa visited Saskatoon and Regina and had a chance to meet representatives of government, business, research, academia, and Indigenous organizations.

🌾 Saskatchewan has a small population of 1,2 million, but its economic performance is impressive. The province is a global leader in several areas – potash, uranium, critical minerals, agricultural commodities, and it generates substantial GDP contributing substantially to the overall Canadian economy. 📈 The province is seeking to strengthen its ties with Europe.

Slovakia is already getting the uranium for its nuclear power plants from there. ⚛️ But there is much more space for cooperation and many trade, innovation, and research cooperation opportunities. 💡🇸🇰🇨🇦

🤝 Many of these topics were discussed with Saskatchewan’s Minister of Trade and Export Development Warren Kaeding MLA for Melville-Saltcoats, Provincial Secretary Honourable Jamie Martens and other government representatives, as well as representatives of the University of Saskatchewan and University of Regina and provincial colleges, Saskatchewan Research Council, the Clean Technologies Research Institute, Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP), and various companies. 🏢🔬

🇨🇦 The economic mission concluded with a reception co-hosted by Her Honour the Honourable Bernadette McIntyre, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan and Honourable Todd Goudy, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. 🥂
