A meaningful step toward reconciliation within our justice system. The gifting of an Eagle Feather to Saskatchewan’s Provincial Court honours Indigenous traditions and creates space for culturally meaningful practices within our courts.

I am especially pleased to see my friend, Judge Brass, part of this important moment. Reconciliation is strengthened through actions that honour Indigenous cultures, traditions, and ways of knowing.

From legislation to action. The passage of Bill S-228 was an important step in addressing forced and coerced sterilization in Canada. Supporting its implementation through Survivor-led education is another important step toward safer, more culturally responsive care.

IPAC is honoured to share that the Survivors Circle for Reproductive Justice has launched a new Trauma Informed Reproductive Justice Training.

Developed with guidance from Survivors, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous support staff, the training strengthens understanding of forced and coerced sterilization, its lasting impacts, and how to engage with Survivors in respectful, culturally safe, and trauma-informed ways.

Des avancées législatives à l'action.

L'adoption du projet de loi S-228 a marqué une étape importante dans la lutte contre la stérilisation forcée et contrainte au Canada. Soutenir sa mise en œuvre grâce à une formation dirigée par des survivantes et survivants constitue une autre étape essentielle vers des soins plus sécuritaires, culturellement sécuritaires et respectueux.

L'AMAC est honorée de partager que Le Cercle des survivantes et survivants pour la justice reproductive a lancé une nouvelle Formation sur la justice reproductive tenant compte des traumatismes.

Élaborée avec les conseils de survivantes et survivants, d'Aînées et d'Aînés, de gardiennes et gardiens du savoir ainsi que de personnes d'expérience offrant du soutien aux survivantes et survivants autochtones, cette formation vise à mieux faire comprendre la stérilisation forcée et contrainte, ses répercussions durables, ainsi que les approches favorisant un accompagnement respectueux, culturellement sécuritaire et tenant compte des traumatismes.

This day serves as an opportunity to learn from Indigenous knowledge, deepen our understanding of Indigenous rights, and reflect on the important role Indigenous Peoples play in shaping Canada’s diverse heritage and shared future. As we continue the journey toward reconciliation, let us reaffirm our commitment to respect, partnership, and meaningful action.

The Canadian Senators Group (CSG) is deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of our esteemed colleague, the Honourable Todd Lewis, Senator for Saskatchewan.

Senator Lewis was a towering figure for Western Canadian agriculture, an indefatigable community champion, and a deeply cherished member of our parliamentary family. His unexpected passing is an immense shock to all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

"Todd brought the authentic, grounded voice of a fourth-generation Saskatchewan farmer directly into the Upper Chamber," said the Hon. Flordeliz (Gigi) Osler, Leader of the Canadian Senators Group. "His decades of dedicated leadership—from heading the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan to serving his local community as a volunteer firefighter and municipal councillor—defined his approach to public service. He was a man of integrity, deep kindness, and sharp wisdom. Canada has lost an extraordinary advocate and parliamentarian. We are heartbroken."

The Canadian Senators Group extends its deepest condolences to Senator Lewis’s family and loved ones during this painful time.

Nunavut Day is an opportunity to recognize the vision and determination of Inuit leaders whose work helped shape Canada. As we celebrate this important day, may we also recommit ourselves to supporting Inuit-led solutions, respecting Inuit rights, and continuing the work of reconciliation through partnership and respect.

First Nations, Métis and Inuit youth voices are an important part of our work in the Senate.

The Senate Committee on Indigenous Peoples is inviting Indigenous youth aged 18 to 35 to participate in Voices of Youth Indigenous Leaders.

This initiative provides an opportunity for youth to share their ideas, experiences and perspectives directly with senators through a committee process. Submissions — written or creative — help inform the committee’s work and contribute to broader discussions. Plus, selected participants will testify before the committee as official witnesses!

I am honoured to be recognized by the Women of the Metis Nation - Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak as an Indigenous women who has shaped Canada.

Today we recognize Senator Yvonne Boyer, a Métis leader whose work has advanced Indigenous health, human rights, and reconciliation across Canada.

Appointed to the Senate of Canada on International Women’s Day in 2018, Senator Boyer has dedicated her career to advocating for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples as a nurse, lawyer, professor, and public servant. Her leadership continues to shape policies and conversations that promote equity, justice, and wellness for Indigenous communities.

As we celebrate National Indigenous History Month, and get closer to Canada Day, we will honour the Indigenous women whose vision, strength, and advocacy have helped shape Canada.
