Developed by Ontario-based creative technology studio BluHeron Interactive, beacbeac is an accessible digital storytelling platform that connects stories to the places where they belong, including parks, festivals, trails, main streets, museums, and public art.

Co-designed with Blind, Low Vision, Deaf, Deafblind, and disabled community members, the platform prioritizes accessibility through location-based storytelling, multilingual content, text-to-speech, and offline access. Visitors can discover stories as they approach a location, without searching through an app or scanning QR codes.

Their team has brought a walkable demonstration that allows delegates to experience the platform firsthand. Walk a few metres and see how a story can arrive directly on your phone as you approach a location.

Creative City Impact Awards | Cultural Leadership — Nominee

Kelly Hill
Cultural Leadership — Nominee

For more than 20 years, Kelly Hill’s company, Hill Strategies, has been a leader in providing statistical insights on the arts and cultural sectors in Canada. His company has produced more than 400 publications and manages the Arts Research Monitor and Statistical Insights on the Arts series. These programs make relevant data and research for the cultural sector easy to find and use. Kelly is passionate about the arts and wants the sector to thrive for its own sake. But he also believes that the arts can contribute to all parts of the Canadian economy and all aspects of Canadian society in meaningful and powerful ways. As such, Hill Strategies’ research has covered a broad range of topics that look both at the cultural sector itself and at its impact on other areas. Topics have included economic impact, equity and inclusion in the arts, working conditions for artists, reconciliation, environmental impacts, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the arts sector, government support for culture (at all levels), and so much more. Few people have contributed so much to the body of knowledge on the arts in Canada.

The 2026 Creative City Impact Awards will be presented at the Creative City Summit in Calgary on Tuesday, October 6 at 12:30 p.m. MT.
