The NDP stands in solidarity with flight attendants fighting against unpaid work.
Westjet workers are fighting for fair pay and respect, but that fight is at risk. The Liberals have used Section 107 multiple times to stamp out worker power, forcing them back to work without a fair contract. Last year, they forced Air Canada flight attendants back to work just 12 hours after going on strike.

Now, as WestJet flight attendants and cabin crew are picking up the struggle against unpaid work, we’re telling the Liberals: no more attacks on the right to strike.

------

This is unacceptable. Parking at our public hospitals should be free for our families who want to visit loved ones. At a time when people are already hurting, increasing the rate is wrong. Our Niagara MPPs have been fighting for free parking at hospitals for years, but the Ford government refuses to listen.

Last week, Niagara Health announced that effective August 1 hospital parking rates will increase to $20 per day. This is nothing but a tax on the sick, their families and frontline staff. We should not be fighting hospital deficits on the backs of the sick.

After campaigning for the elimination of these fees in the last election I tabled a motion to eliminate hospital parking fees across Ontario and properly fund hospitals for any resulting shortfall. Unfortunately, the Ford government voted it down.

When the Legislature resumes this fall we have prepared a new comprehensive private members bill that I will be introducing to end these fees once and for all. This will be an opportunity for the Ford government to do the right thing and support legislation that puts patients and families ahead of profits.

If you support this plan please add your name to our petition.

Bravo Mayor Olivia Chow for taking action to protect Toronto residents from surveillance pricing.

It’s time to end this predatory practice before it becomes normalized - yet another daily digital injustice.

So far, the Carney government has promised vague action in the future, from a new agency that doesn’t even exist yet.

Instead, we need a national ban on surveillance pricing right now. That’s what Premier Wab Kinew has done in Manitoba, what NDP premiers in waiting like Marit Stiles and Claudia Chender are fighting for, and what Mayor Chow is proposing.

Your personal data should be yours alone, not a commodity for Big Tech and Big Retail to mine, sell, and use to rip you off.

Major and concerning development from the chaos of the AI arms race.

Last week, a company called Hugging Face (which hosts AI models and datasets) said it had been subject to a cyberattack. This was a completely new kind of attack. For the first time, an AI agent has executed an autonomous attack on another system.

Yesterday, OpenAI admitted that some of its models had escaped their sandbox and were responsible for the intrusion. This is a first (at least we hope it is!) and even OpenAI is calling it "an unprecedented cyber incident”.

These companies, and the tech oligarchs leading them, are completely out of control. The Carney government is committing a grave error by embracing corporate generative AI with no controls, regulation, or red lines whatsoever.

We need a data centre moratorium, and a transparent, national debate on the threats AI poses, immediately. This is terrifying stuff that needs sunlight and government regulation with maximum urgency.

Thanks to Avi Lewis for his statement on Donald Trump’s new 50% tariff on a range of Canadian goods in 30 days:

"The announcement of 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods is the latest economic gr***de thrown over the border by an out of control President who has lost touch with reality.

It is a direct attack on Canadian workers and industries, putting thousands of jobs at risk. And it will drive up costs for American consumers, who like Canadian consumers, are already feeling pain at the pumps and supermarket checkouts because of Trump’s illegal war on Iran.

Donald Trump is trying a new, obscure legal basis for this latest attack. If these tariffs go ahead, we must be prepared to fight them with counter-tariffs and put every dollar behind supporting workers in affected sectors. The Carney government must refrain from more concessions.

We are tired of being treated as Trump’s tariff guinea pigs. New Democrats stand with workers, communities and all Canadians in defiance of this newest threat to our economy and sovereignty.”
