Good Luck at Provincials, Jonah! We are proud to call you a Blue!
SMFA Provincials Spotlight: Jonah Turton
Jonah is no stranger to the Festival stage! His performing journey began at age 5 with Spoken Word, and he has been off and running ever since. Like his brothers, he has been working behind the scenes of Equinox Theatre since he was old enough to walk, learning hands on all the many different roles and tasks that happen offstage to make a show successful. In 2023 he made his stage debut as Mike Teavee in Equinox's W***y Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He has continued to be an onstage presence in the community, performing in Peggy the Pint Sized Pirate for 2024's River and Rail Art Venture, Equinox Theater's A Celebration of Christmas, Farce of Nature and The Little Town of Christmas. For the last 2 years, Jonah has performed in both Musical Theater and Spoken Word at the Outlook Music festival. This was his first year performing in Provincial classes, and he qualified for the Provincial Competition in the Spoken Word category.
As a member of his school's student leadership team, Jonah is sometimes called upon to address the students at assemblies. "Performing has given me more confidence to be able to speak in front of the school or in my classroom", said Jonah of the benefits he has gained from his festival appearances. "Learning poems and songs for the festival has helped me learn how to be dedicated to practicing, and lots of different ways to memorize things!"
Jonah is a Grade 7 student at Outlook High School, where he enjoys being a member of the curling and golf teams, Lego club, and a Student Leadership Committee member. We wish him all the best at his first Provincial competition!
