🇨🇦 On this day in 2011, Jack Layton passed away at 61, just months after leading the NDP to its historic breakthrough as Canada’s Official Opposition.

A longtime Toronto city councillor before becoming federal NDP leader in 2003, Layton led the party to 103 seats in the 2011 election, still its best federal result.

His final public letter to Canadians became part of his legacy, ending with words that still resonate 15 years later:

“Love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.”

CBC’s extensive coverage of Layton’s political life, final campaign, death and extraordinary public outpouring became part of how Canadians experienced that moment together. Whatever your politics, preserving that kind of shared national record is one of the important roles of a public broadcaster.

Funny how the “orange hue” only affected OPSEU workers and union flags.

This is a government that would rather edit reality than deal with it. The workers in those photos came to Ford Fest because Ford still hasn’t returned the wages he took from them under Bill 124.

He couldn’t Photoshop his way out of getting booed. And he can’t Photoshop away the problems he’s ignoring either.

BGOS NDP was happy and proud to be part of the Owen Sound Pride Parade and Block Party on June 13. We gathered signatures on a petition to further limit harassment of the LGBTQI2S+ community. Many asked, isn't the community already protected? The answer is yes, but this would allow drag performers to enter and exit venues without having to go through an antagonistic, threatening crowd, for example. We will be submitting the signatures to NDP MPP Peggy Sattler to present at Queen's Park (when they sit again, which isn't until the end of October!)
