Every person is unique, and dementia affects every individual differently, with no two people experiencing symptoms in exactly the same way.

Symptoms also vary by type of dementia, with Alzheimerโ€™s disease being the most common type of dementia.

Here are the 10 most common warning signs:

๐Ÿง  Memory loss
๐Ÿง  Difficulty performing familiar tasks
๐Ÿง  Problems with language
๐Ÿง  Disorientation to time and place
๐Ÿง  Poor or decreased judgement
๐Ÿง  Problems keeping track of things
๐Ÿง  Misplacing things
๐Ÿง  Changes in mood and behaviour
๐Ÿง  Challenges understanding visual and spatial information
๐Ÿง  Withdrawal from work or social activities

If these signs are new, they may be a sign of dementia. Dementia is not a part of normal aging. If you think that these problems are affecting your daily life, or the life of someone you know, you should talk to your doctor or seek out more information from your local Alzheimer's Society.

The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do ๐Ÿ’™

September is World Alzheimer's Month; we're encouraging our community to learn more about the importance of an early dementia diagnosis.

Too often, fear and stigma prevent people from seeking answers when changes in memory or thinking begin. But an early diagnosis can open the door to treatment, support, planning, education, and hope, helping individuals and families live well for longer.

Dementia affects more than 1,100 families across Grey-Bruce and touches countless families, friends, neighbours, and caregivers.

Let's work together this September to reduce stigma, start meaningful conversations, and build a more dementia-friendly community where no one feels alone.

๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿฅ’ Growing Connections Through Gardening ๐Ÿ…๐ŸŒฟ

As August comes to a close, we're celebrating the wonderful harvest from the Active Living Owen Sound community garden at the New Life Centre. Earlier this spring, participants planted seeds and nurtured the garden together, enjoying a meaningful, dementia-friendly activity that encouraged connection, purpose, and time spent outdoors.

Thanks to plenty of sunshine, rain, and care, the garden produced an abundance of fresh vegetables, including beans, peppers, tomatoes, dill, parsley, lettuce, basil, and cucumbers. Participants were able to take home their harvest to enjoy in their meals and share with loved ones.

Gardening offers so much more than fresh produce. For people living with dementia and their care partners, it can spark memories, engage the senses, encourage gentle physical activity, and create opportunities for conversation and connection. ๐Ÿ’š

What a beautiful reminder that when we plant seeds together, we grow friendships, confidence, and community too. ๐ŸŒป

Why Dementia-Friendly Matters for Local Businesses

Did you know that a dementia-friendly community starts with everyday places like stores, banks, restaurants, pharmacies, and service counters?

For someone living with dementia, simple tasks like shopping, ordering a coffee, attending an appointment, or asking for directions can become more challenging. A little understanding from staff can make a world of difference.

โœ… Better customer experiences
โœ… Increased confidence and independence for people living with dementia
โœ… Reduced stress for care partners and families
โœ… Stronger community connections
โœ… A reputation for being welcoming and inclusive

Being dementia-friendly doesn't require major changes. Often, it's as simple as:

Speaking clearly and calmly
Offering extra time and patience
Providing clear signage and directions
Recognizing when someone may need support
Creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone

People living with dementia are valued customers, neighbours, volunteers, and community members. When businesses and service providers learn how to support them, everyone benefits.

Together, we can build a community where every person feels respected, understood, and included.

๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ We're stepping up for brain health!

The team at the Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce is taking part in the 5th Annual Mรฉtis Nation of Ontario Urban Portage Challenge, challenging ourselves to stay active, support our well-being, and keep our brains healthy through movement.

From September 1st to October 23rd, we'll be tracking our kilometres and encouraging one another to keep moving. We invite our community partners to join the fun! Gather your coworkers, friends, family members, and even your four-legged walking buddies, and create a team of your own.

Take a Moment to Breathe ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’™

Living with Alzheimer's disease or another dementia can bring challenges, uncertainty, and stress for everyone involved. That's why taking time to relax and recharge is so important, whether you're living with the disease, supporting a loved one, or navigating the journey as a family.

Simple activities like listening to calming music, spending time in nature, enjoying a quiet cup of tea, practicing deep breathing, looking through cherished photos, or simply sitting together in a peaceful moment can help reduce stress and create a sense of comfort and connection.

Remember, it's okay to slow down. Rest is not a luxury. It's an important part of caring for your brain, body, and emotional well-being.

๐Ÿ’™ Be gentle with yourself today.
๐Ÿ’™ Take a break when you need one.
๐Ÿ’™ Celebrate the small moments of peace.

Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is simply pause, breathe, and enjoy the moment we're in.

What a wonderful day spent at Andreโ€™s Alpacas! ๐Ÿฆ™ ๐Ÿ’™

Our Neustadt Minds in Motion group enjoyed a fantastic visit where we had the opportunity to meet these gentle, curious animals up close. Everyone had fun feeding the alpacas, learning more about them, and even taking them for a walk!

There were plenty of smiles, laughter, and memorable moments shared throughout the visit. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Andreโ€™s Alpacas for making us feel so welcome and for creating such a fun and relaxing experience for our group.

We loved every minute of our adventure! ๐Ÿฆ™โœจ
