This week, I shared something deeply personal publicly for the first time.

Not for sympathy. Not for attention. But because silence carries weight, and healing begins when we allow ourselves to step out from underneath it. đź’›

As someone who now works closely with women navigating trauma, homelessness, addiction, mental health struggles, grief, and survival, I’ve come to understand something very clearly: pain grows in secrecy, but healing grows in connection.

For many years, parts of my story lived quietly inside of me. Sharing it openly was terrifying, but also freeing. It reminded me that strength is not pretending something never hurt you — strength is learning to keep living, loving, parenting, and growing despite it.

I also recognize that stories like this ripple outward and can affect others connected to them in deeply personal ways. That reality is something I have thought about heavily for many years and never took lightly. Speaking publicly was not done without care, reflection, or awareness of the impact it could have.

At this point in my healing, though, I could no longer continue carrying this quietly behind closed doors. Healing, for me, has meant allowing myself to stop hiding behind the secrecy and shame attached to something that was never my fault.

If my story helps even one person feel less alone, then speaking up was worth it.

Healing is rarely linear. Some days feel heavy. Some days feel empowering. But every step forward matters, even the small, quiet ones.

To anyone carrying painful experiences in silence: you deserve support, safety, and healing too. And when you are ready, your voice matters. đź’›

Working alongside people who are navigating substance use while trying to find their way toward healing is… complex.

there is so much guilt.
so much shame.
so much weight carried in the belief that they are responsible for where they are right now.

I see how helpless it can feel.
how hopeless some days are.
how hard it is to break a cycle when you’re not in a space that can hold you 24/7.

and I feel it too.

there are days where I question if I am doing enough.
days where I wonder if I'm failing them because I cannot be there in the moments when the cravings are the loudest.
because the reality is — I can’t always be present in the way they need, not in this role.

and sometimes, even the things meant to help —
“safety plans”
“support plans”

can begin to feel like something else entirely.

like pressure.
like expectation.
like another way to feel they’ve let someone down.

but this is what I remind myself, and what I gently try to remind them:

healing isn’t linear.
relapse is not failure.
needing support does not make you weak.
and no one is beyond reaching something different for themselves.

we are not here to fix people.
we are here to walk alongside them — even in the messy, in-between spaces.

some days that has to be enough.

— Steady Steps.

Today is International Women’s Day. 💜

This year, the day holds even more meaning for me as I step into a new role as Coordinator at Marguerite’s Place.

Supporting vulnerable women and gender-diverse individuals as they reclaim their power, rebuild their sense of safety, and find their way forward is work that I feel deeply honoured to be part of.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned — both personally and professionally — it’s that healing and strength don’t always look the way we expect them to.

Sometimes it looks like setting a boundary.
Sometimes it looks like asking for help.
Sometimes it looks like simply getting through the day.

Every one of those moments is a step forward.

At Steady Steps, I talk a lot about how change and healing happen slowly, gently, and often in ways that others may never see. But those quiet steps matter.

Today I’m celebrating the resilience of women and gender-diverse people everywhere — the ones finding their voices, breaking cycles, rebuilding their lives, and learning that they deserve safety, dignity, and peace.

I’m grateful to now be part of work that helps create spaces where that healing can happen.

One steady step at a time. ✨
