"A life that shone bright enough for all to see." Dolly Parton was an iconic singer, songwriter, philanthropist and humanitarian. When her passing was announced yesterday, like most in the library world, we were struck by the sudden loss of such a determined advocate for early literacy.
Today, we decided to remember Dolly through the pages of her life -- both the ones she wrote, those wrote about her, and the book titles the world came to know through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, a program where her dedication to inspire a love to read by gifting books to children led to an international phenomenon that has included Canada for the past 20 years.
One of our Library team members fondly shared, "The Imagination Library meant a lot to me after having my first child. Being new to the area and not knowing the awesomeness that public library had, I subscribed my son to this program and it was life changing. One of the first books we received was "Llama Llama Red Pajama" by Anna Dewdney. It still holds a special place in my heart and is my choice to remember Dolly today".
We are proud to carry children's titles that appear on the Imagination Library list. Feel free to ask any of our staff about these and other gems in our Adult collection:
📘Dolly Parton, Star of the Show - My Life on Stage by Dolly Parton with Tom Roland
📙Ain't Nobody's Fool by Martha Ackmann
📘Run Rose Run - by Dolly Parton and James Patterson
📘Behind the Seams, My Life in Rhinestones by Dolly Parton with Holly George-Warren
