North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre

This female Red Crossbill arrived in our care after colliding with a window, sustaining a fractured wing that required some extra TLC during her recovery. Her wing was carefully wrapped, and regular physiotherapy was performed every couple of days to help maintain her range of motion and support proper healing.

Now, she’s finally reached the last stage of her rehabilitation in a large outdoor enclosure, where she can stretch her wings and build up her strength. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that she’ll be ready to take to the skies again soon!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and found a little time to relax and recharge, just like our three sleepy bear cubs!

This time of year, bears enter a phase called hyperphagia, when their appetites increase and they eat as much as they can to build up fat reserves for the cold winter months ahead. Those extra calories help fuel them through torpor, a time of reduced activity when their bodies conserve energy during the colder months.

As you can imagine, these growing cubs go through a lot of food every day! We’re always grateful for donations of:

🫐 Fresh or frozen berries
🍎 Other fruits
🥕 Vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, broccoli, green beans and corn
🥚 Eggs
🥩 Red meat
🐛 Dried mealworms

Every donation helps us provide the care and nutrition these little ones need as they grow. If you’re able to contribute, we would be so grateful!

For now, these three are taking a break from all their snacking and wrestling and enjoying a much deserved afternoon nap!
