Last summer we received calls about 2 injured Snapping Turtles - one that had been struck by a boat (1st pic) and another which was lethargic which we later learned had a skin infection (4th pic). We sent them to where they were rehabbed over the winter. Last week we were able to release both turtles back into their home on Wasauksing! Chii miigwetch to everyone who participated in the releases and in Aidan’s demonstration on how to safely pick up Snapping Turtles!

🐢 Turtle nesting season is underway!

If you spot a turtle nesting or notice any nesting activity, please contact Aidan as soon as possible so we can help protect the eggs. Many turtles choose to nest along road shoulders, making them especially vulnerable to traffic and other disturbances.

While you're out and about, keep an eye out for turtles on roads and help spread the word to friends and family. Every observation helps us protect these important species.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please reach out to Aidan. Thank you for helping conserve our local turtle populations!

We’re on the lookout for Eastern Hog-nosed Snakes this summer! These harmless but highly dramatic snakes are declining in the community, and we’re working to better understand their habitat use and where they may be crossing roads so we can help protect them.

If you spot an Eastern Hog-nosed Snake, please contact Aidan with the location and any photos if possible!

By bringing together First Nations, organizations, and communities, the Maamwi Anjiakiziwin initative shows that caring for the land also means caring for relationships.

From turtle ceremonies to collaborative conservation, Maamwi is about more than protecting species, it’s about building trust, sharing knowledge, and walking the path of reconciliation together.

Learn how the Maamwi Anjiakiziwin initiative built strong relationships across the eastern shore through our Story Map https://arcg.is/1WSCe80

We are grateful to the Canada Nature Fund Community Nominated Priority Places for funding the initiative and making it possible.
