Our THIRD summer snack bag approaching!!

We’re finalizing our shopping list for our third pick-up, and need our community’s help with a few items:

🥣 50 boxes of cereal (any kind)
🥜 42 jars of peanut butter
🍎 40 packages of applesauce

Please connect with us if you are unable to drop them off at Dr. Erin Axt, Optometrist office between now and Friday, July 31st, between 8:30-5. Otherwise, you can drop all donations there!

Our SECOND summer snack bag approaching!!

We’re finalizing our shopping list for Tuesday’s pick-up, and need our community’s help with a few more items:

🔸 50 bags of Crispy Minis (any flavour)
🍎 50 packages of applesauce

Please connect with us if you are unable to drop them off at Dr. Erin Axt, Optometrist office between now and Friday, or on Monday, July 20th, between 8:30-5. Otherwise, you can drop all donations there!

Food Relief Network - West Parry Sound is our oldest program. We say that because it operated for over 20 years under another name.

We are so happy that during COVID we were able to revive it with a few modifications.

We’re sharing this post because we’re often tagged and thought of when seeing someone is in need, but want to share the difference between our program, and the food bank’s program.

One-Time Relief: Why the Food Relief Network Isn’t a Food Bank

We keep seeing these two get lumped together, so we wanted to clear it up.

Food banks are ongoing — you can go back next week, next month, next year. That’s the job, and it’s a necessary one.

Our program isn’t that. The Food Relief Network (unique to the West Parry Sound Area) is built to catch someone once — in the moment something’s gone sideways, and they need a bridge, not a subscription.

That’s on purpose. It means we can move fast without a heavy intake process. It means help shows up when the crisis is happening, not weeks later. And it means the resource keeps circulating to the next household instead of the same people leaning on it indefinitely.

Neither model is better — they solve different problems. But if you’ve ever wondered why we’re upfront that this is one moment of support, not ongoing — that’s why.

Thanks to our Summer Snack Bag team!

We have such a wonderful group of volunteers (not to mention many fab members of our Board who are on the ground running) who help us shop, pack and distribute these bags. With every pick-up that we prepare, we get just a little bit better with the details!

A sincere thank you to the following people and businesses:

~ Howard at the Hub, and Connie with the Early ON program who graciously donate the space, and help to set-up the perfect place for our pick ups!

~ Crofter's Organic for their donation

~ No Frills – who always go above and beyond helping us to secure the items that we need for the snack bags

~ Sobeys – for also helping us out with some last min items

~ Many community members who answered the call for items needed (in under 2 hours, we had this fulfilled – talk about a fabulous community!)

~ Terry from Student Nutrition Ontario - Nipissing, Muskoka, Parry Sound– who was on the ground and running (even driving) to assist us with our pick-ups today. Thanks to them we also had the wonderful eggs for this (and the next) snack bag to include as an item, as well as some gift cards that were an integral part to our purchases for this date.

~ To the wonderful volunteers – from the 2 students we had, to the community members and board members – you guys never hesitate to dive in and do whatever is needed to make things run on schedule, and go the extra mile.

We're thankful for both Crofter's Organic and the Student Nutrition Ontario - Nipissing, Muskoka, Parry Sound programs for their great donations to our Summer Snack Bag program!

Crofter's has donated (for the second year!) jam for our snack bags!

And the Student Nutrition Program (also for the second year) was able to help us secure an egg donation and a generous donation of gift cards.

We really appreciate this support from both organizations.
We're just finishing up the shopping lists for Tuesday's Summer Snack Bags - you won't be disappointed!
