We finished July off with an incredible week of day camp!

Last week, NIHA was proud to partner with GPFC Pitone Youth Group, You Be Youth - RCSP -Resource Centre for Su***de Prevention, Kickstand GP, Odyssey House, YMCA, Jr. Forest Rangers, and Natascha Okimaw to host The Friendship Project Culture Day Camp. It was a week full of learning, laughter, culture, and connection, and we're so grateful to everyone who helped make it such a meaningful experience.

We kicked off the week in a good way with a sharing circle led by Elder Len, followed by a teepee teaching. The youth then worked together to raise their very own teepee in the backyard at Kickstand—a great way to start the week while learning about culture, teamwork, and tradition.

Our second day took us to Saskatoon Island Park with Natascha Okimaw and the Jr. Forest Rangers for a full day on the land. The youth jumped right into a friendly berry-picking competition and ended up harvesting an impressive 17 pounds of berries! We also learned how to build shelters, start fires, and cook over an open fire. With Natascha's guidance, everyone helped prepare a delicious stew and bannock, making it a day full of new skills, laughter, and memories.

Day three was all about learning from our amazing community partners. Odyssey House led discussions about building safe and healthy relationships, the YMCA helped everyone create beautiful sun prints, and NIHA facilitated conversations about STBBIs and s*xual health in a safe and welcoming environment.

To finish off the week, we headed out to Red Willow River to enjoy time on the land together. We spent the day playing outside, connecting with one another, and wrapped everything up with a good old-fashioned hot dog roast.

A huge thank you to all of our partners for sharing your time, knowledge, and passion with our youth. Programs like this are only possible because of the amazing organizations and people who come together to support our community.

A special shout-out to Hanna from You Be Youth - RCSP for helping facilitate throughout the week, and to the incredible staff at Kickstand for all of your hard work behind the scenes to make everything run so smoothly. We appreciate you all so much!

Until next time, thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this week one to remember.

I had the opportunity to join the GPFC Pitone Youth Group & Grande Prairie Babies' Best Start Family Culture Camp for a wonderful day of learning, connection, and time on the land💚

I hosted a salve-making workshop where we talked about how sharing personal care products can increase the risk of STBBIs, and how plant medicines can support our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Together, we used a herbal-infused oil and beeswax to create our own healing salves, and everyone went home with a little something they made themselves.

After the workshop, we cooled off by putting our feet in the river—a perfect way to end a beautiful afternoon!

A very special thank you to my amazing volunteer, Natal, for helping me pack supplies, making the drive with me, and assisting throughout the workshop. I couldn't have done it without you!

As we move into August, we're reflecting on July and what an incredibly full and rewarding month it was! From camps and workshops to time spent on the land, it has been filled with moments of connection, joy, learning, and laughter for the youth, families, and community we have the privilege of working alongside.

We started with an outstanding week at Camp Artaban with The Friendship Project Overnight Culture Camp at the beginning of July!

NIHA was proud to partner with Sagitawa Friendship Society in Peace River, High Level Native Friendship Society, and our very own GPFC Pitone Youth Group to bring allllllll the youth together for an amazing week of connection, culture, laughter, and fun on the land.

We were honoured to welcome Knowledge Keeper Alexa Lizotte, who shared her beautiful fish scale art with us and gave everyone the chance to create their own piece. We also had the pleasure of spending time with Natascha Okimaw of Natawihowin Health Navigation, founder of The Friendship Project Camp, who led us on a medicine walk before teaching us how to turn those teachings into beautiful eco sun prints using plants and turmeric to create framed nature art.

The rest of our week was packed with activities that brought everyone together. We made sun catchers, went canoeing, tried our hand at archery, made Bannock and stew, went swimming, played games, got creative with crafts, cooked together, and shared so many laughs along the way. Every evening ended around the fire with a sharing circle, giving everyone a chance to connect, reflect, and support one another.

To wrap up an unforgettable week, we celebrated with a mini giveaway before heading home with new friendships, new skills, and memories that will last a lifetime.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this camp such a meaningful experience! Watching our youth learn, grow, and build lasting connections is what it's all about!
