Please share this message. Flying drones near fires impedes emergency response. Just don't do it.

We are currently assisting Peachland Fire and Rescue Services in response to K51966, located southwest of Peachland. Our crews and fire department personnel are onsite working along the flanks of the fire, which is currently under one hectare in size. A drone was spotted during our initial response to this incident, forcing aerial resources to adjust response tactics to ensure the safety of responders. When you fly a drone or UAV near or over a wildfire, you're breaking the law and endangering firefighting personnel. Transport Canada and the BC Wildfire Service explicitly prohibit the use of drones or UAVs of any size near a wildfire.

All wildfires are automatically “flight restricted” according to federal Canadian Aviation Regulations. The restricted area is within a radius of five nautical miles around any smoke or fire and to an altitude of 3,000 feet above ground level.

Peachland Fire & Rescue extends a heartfelt thank you to Peachland residents for your tremendous resilience and support during the recent emergency response to the Bald Lake Wildfire. Your willingness to step up for evacuees, neighbours and other community members in need demonstrated the strength and compassion that makes Peachland such a special community.

We’re not out of the woods yet — pardon the pun.

With drought conditions continuing and the risk of wildfire remaining high, it’s important that we all continue to exercise extra caution. Now is a great time to take another look at your property and consider what more you can do to reduce wildfire risk and help protect your home and neighbourhood.

The Peachland FireSmart team will be at the Peachland Fall Fair on Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13. 🔥 FireSmart Program Update – Peachland Fire Rescue Service 🔥
To our Peachland residents and community members,
Due to current wildfire conditions and increased operational demands, the Peachland FireSmartBC Team will be temporarily suspending FireSmartBC home assessments. Currently, our personnel and resources are being redirected to support wildfire response efforts and help keep our community safe.
We understand how important FireSmartBC assessments are for homeowners looking to reduce wildfire risk, and we appreciate your patience and understanding during this period. While assessments are on hold, there are still many simple and effective steps you can take to FireSmartBC your property.
We encourage residents to visit the FireSmart BC website for practical information, tips, and resources on how to prepare your home and property for wildfire. Small actions taken today can make a big difference in protecting your home and neighbourhood.
Please know that the Peachland Fire Rescue Service is standing with you and for you during these challenging times. The safety of our residents, firefighters, and community remains our top priority. As wildfire conditions improve and the threat to our homes has diminished, we look forward to returning to regular FireSmartBC programming and conducting assessments once again.
We will keep the District of Peachland community informed and will announce when FireSmartBC assessments and services resume.

Meet Josh Smith he will be attending the Wildfire Preparedness Day on May 2nd!

Josh is a plant biologist who fell in love with the Okanagan ecosystem while attending UBCO. Following his passion, he has been the manager of XEN Nursery in West Kelowna since 2017, where they grow and propagate native and xeriscape plants for use throughout the Okanagan on ecological restoration projects, commercial properties, or sell to homeowners and landscapers for residential use. He is also a board member of the Okanagan Xeriscape Association, a non-profit dedicated to providing education and resources to homeowners on how to conserve water with their landscaping throughout the Okanagan Basin.

The Bulyea FireSmart neighbourhood was hard at work this weekend, taking steps to become more resilient to wildfires.

Thanks to the combined efforts of dedicated neighbourhood volunteers, Peachland firefighters, and volunteered time from Tony Wright, we successfully cleared roadside debris and reduced fuel loads on individual properties.

We excited to have Karla Hoffman at our wildfire preparedness day event on May 2! Come chat with her and have any questions answered about FireSmart landscaping.

Karla has been a horticulturist since 1997 - she has designed, installed, and maintained landscapes - from small residential sites to commercial, university, and municipal grounds. She also enjoyed teaching Soil Science and Landscape Design for first year horticulture students. For over a decade Karla led a public education campaign about plant health, integrated pest management, and how to conserve landscape water. She worked on the original FireSmart Canada Guide to Landscaping, the FireSmart BC Landscaping Guide, and more recently contributed to the FireSmart BC Course for Landscaping Professionals. Currently Karla enjoys sharing information about creating and maintaining fire-resistant landscapes and is involved in ongoing development of education materials with FireSmart BC.
