5 DAY OUTLOOK OUTLOOK

A weak cold front past through Thursday afternoon, with weak ridging starting to take hold behind it for the next couple of days. Another weak cold front is expected to pass through the area overnight Saturday into Sunday morning. We will have a couple more days of weak high pressure follow before a continued overall troughing pattern continues mid week. Expect temperatures below seasonal values with a small POP tonight, Sunday morning and again mid week.

FRIDAY

RASP has a pessimistic wind forecast, but others do show a bit less for at least the first half of the day. I will be available to shuttle at 10am, if the forecast improves in the morning. If not, I will be out doing some serious kiting with some new gear... glad to help anyone that needs it. Airport early, our out at the Miller LZ later, if it gets strong (yay, beer after!)

WEEKEND

Midday currently shows some strong winds Saturday, with things smoothing out as the weekend progresses and into Monday. Some instability with the passing cold front Sunday morning may produce some showers and a small chance of thunder.

I have a Pemby-centric “Thermaling and Intro to XC” course running Saturday through Monday... if anyone would like to join, contact me for details. We also have a more robust “Pemberton XC” course July 25-27.
Part of our continuing education here at S2SPG. Hope to see you out! 😉

FORECAST OUTLOOK

SYNOPSIS...
Upper level trough over the area through tonight will shift east Saturday. Another upper level trough will move over SW BC Monday. Cool unsettled weather will continue through the middle of the week.

Expect cloud to partially dissipate Saturday morning, but bases will remain relatively low until late in the day. There are also signs of possible significant inflow after 3pm, so stay aware. Sunday looks to be the best day, with relatively light winds. Expect SW flow with light east on the ground in the mornings and continued significant amounts of cloud. The new trough is expected Monday, with more south wind and increasing POP for most of the week. No significant summer in the forecast yet 😓

SHUTTLE PLANS

I will have students Saturday through Monday and some Tandems Sunday. Space will be limited for the shuttle, but other pilots will also have vehicles going up. I will be running as many as I can while conditions are flyable. I will post first runs with any room and will update shuttle times by radio when I have room. Frequency 146.415

Will update at 8am Saturday.

Week Outlook.

Light ridging Monday will give way to a weak front passing through Tuesday into Wednesday. Ridging returns for the warmest day of the week Thursday. Good conditions continue with slightly stronger winds Friday before a possible cooling for the weekend.

Flying may be possible at low levels Monday, but strong winds aloft, along with mostly cloudy skies and lower easterly valley flow early, make it less than optimal. Expect showers Tuesday and Wednesday, with a slight chance of a thundershower. Thursday and Friday look to be flyable. We are awaiting better resolution on models for the weekend.

I’m waiting on the morning run for a possible shuttle schedule Monday. I won’t be available until Thursday otherwise.

SUNDAY, JUNE 14
NO SHUTTLE

high winds are expected over the area, and possible showers by some forecasts. We lucked out Saturday, with RASP being right on the money, and got in a nice afternoon thermic flight down to Owl and landing an the Miller’s for beer from lower around 2pm. Looks like unfavourable weather until Thursday with current forecasts. Will update with decent flyable weather.

***UPDATED***

SATURDAY, JUNE 13
Shuttle at 10:30

***RASP shows flyable conditions until ~ 2pm, while GC forecast predicts a high chance of showers by noon. I will be at the LZ with students and glad to take a jaunt up for those that want to get an early run in. ***

Saturday looks like it may be the only flyable day until Wednesday, but may only be marginal.... Junuary has got an expiry date coming up soon though, we hope!😉

I will update with a shuttle time in the morning... I have a few students in tow, but we intend to be in Pemberton for the day for ground school.

***UPDATED***
FRIDAY, JUNE 7
SHUTTLE DEPARTS 10

*** my suspicion of RASPs underestimate seems fact. As yesterday, so today, with more cloud and chance of thunderstorms later. I will be over to drive up early at 9:45, if conditions stay amicable for an early flight. Will add another one later if it still looks good and demand is there. Southerly flow is still expected***

The front that was just off the coast has broken up, but a upper level trough remains and will continue to push south over the region, bringing increasing cloud through Friday, along with showers starting late Friday and carrying through Saturday night. Long term models are predicting continued unstable cool conditions for the following week.

I believe RASP may be optimistic as most models are showing significantly more cloud coming in by late morning. Light southerly follow will dominate for most of the day before picking up in the evening. Depending on valley flow, it may be a Miller landing day.

I will need to have at least one vehicle drive to the bike lot if we are over 5, or you are welcome to get picked from that lot. If we can have that sorted before departure times, it will make shuttle schedules more efficient. Please comment on this post to reserve spots.

THURSDAY, JUNE 4 *** UPDATED ***
SHUTTLE MEET 10:30am, Late afternoon?

***A bit ‘Junuary’, but worth a look. Will meet at the LZ at 10:30 to do one shuttle if conditions warrant. Friday looks a bit more optimistic, but light S-SE May be problematic if we don’t get enough sun on the slope to get the valley flow I’d expect same time tomorrow.***

So Thursday is our last day without the new permanent shuttle.. It will be delivered later in the afternoon. I have a temporary quarter-ton GMC for the day tomorrow. Max 8 pax.

Wednesday’s forecast quickly devolved from epic to tricky... Lillooet winds (E) wedged themselves under the prevailing SW and made lower launch quite unfriendly... but some more advanced pilots managed to claw their way out. Others were not so lucky and couldn’t reach the LZ. Upper stayed out of the mixing air and stayed clean above the fray. Some pilots had success flying down to Owl from Upper later in the day. Instability was stronger than forecast... so we had more cloud and some early roving showers until almost 2pm. Wind forecast also increased later in the day.

The same instability we saw on Wednesday is expected to linger, with a weak front breaking up off the coast Tuesday night, and a upper level trough and onshore flow continuing the cool and showery conditions for the next several days. Expect morning sky’s to over-develop quickly, and a 30% chance of showers with stronger winds (~25km/h) for most of the afternoon. There may be an early window for flights from upper, perhaps heading to Miller as a best option with the stronger SW flow at that hight. I will need to update from the morning run of the forecasts to make a call, as conditions are currently volatile. Currently, I’m not optimistic about flying options after noon, with perhaps an opening late in the day. I will update at 8am.

OUTLOOK

A continuing cool and showery trend... 30-60% POP continues through the weekend. Some flying may be possible, but far from optimal conditions.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6
Shuttles 10am, noon, 2pm

Fires are still being mopped up on Fraser and North Creek, but no further air assets are planned at this time. Technically the NOTAMS are up until the fire is fully cleared, but we have gotten permission to fly from the fire base chief. This could change if there is a flare-up, so check in before you fly. I have three rounds of tandems, so shuttles at 10,12 & 2. Later flights may be recommended to fly to Miller if winds pick up, with a southwest flow expected today. That could push the last shuttle back a little. Will be on radio.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5.
Shuttle at noon? 3pm?

Talked to the fire chief. They are still working on the MacKenzie fires, but think they can have it cleared by lunchtime. He is going to talk to the crews and Blackcomb to confirm and get back to me at 11.

They are very happy we are taking an active approach to abiding by the fire NOTAMS. He is trying to clear it early for us because of the effort. Please don't jeopardize this by flying before NOTAMS are cleared.

For those that don't know, there is automatically a 5Nmi no-fly zone around any forest fire. That zone stays in place until it is cleared, and removed as an active fire site. Once that happens, and only then, the fire marker is removed from the BC Fire Sevices map and the NOTAM is cleared.

There is still an active fire at North Creek, so that closes flying past Hurley.

I have tandems on the first run with room for 5, Lots of room on the 3, if I have enough takers.

Talked to the fire base this morning. We still have two fires listed as "out of control" and there will be air assets working on them today. A No-fly zone is established over our flying area and they request us to stay out of the air while they try and get these fires under control. I will be getting an update every morning until they are out and will pass on the info here.
