Community Update #16 for the Place Glacier Outburst Flood Hazard is now available. The Evacuation Alert for the Gates Lake and Poole Creek area remains in effect.

SLRD contractors have completed repairs to the Place Creek water channel embankment that was damaged in the outburst that occurred last year. This channel repair work is intended to restore risk levels to residences at valley bottom to what they were prior to the 2024 outburst event by maintaining Place Creek’s historical flow toward Poole Creek. The repairs are not intended to create a new watercourse or transfer flood risk from one area to another.

06/07/2026

An Evacuation Alert has been issued for properties in the Poole Creek / Gates Lake area of Electoral Area C due to the risk of overland flooding and debris flooding associated with a potential glacial lake outburst.

Data collected from the Place Glacier hazard monitoring system indicates that the glacial lake has reached approximately the same volume observed prior to the 2025 outburst event, with an estimated depth of approximately 24 metres. Given the potential threat to public safety and the possibility of impacts to life and safety, residents and property owners in the affected area should be prepared to leave the area on short notice.

The SLRD has issued an Evacuation Alert for the following properties listed on this evacuation notice: https://www.slrd.bc.ca/emergency-program/emergency-alerts-orders/evacuation-alert-area-c-place-glacier-outburst-flood-risk
