🚨 MYTH vs. FACT: Where should your
carbon monoxide alarm go?
Plug-in or ceiling-mounted?

✅ FACT: Both types can detect carbon monoxide. Wherever you install your CO alarm, always follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper installation.
What matters most isn't whether your alarm is on the ceiling or plugged into an outlet-it's making sure you have the required alarms in the right locations.

▪️In Ontario, as of January 1, 2026, CO alarms are required on every storey of a home and outside all sleeping areas if the home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage—including storeys without bedrooms.
Does your home have one on every storey⁉️
✅ Check.☝🏻Test. ♨️Protect.

🚨Keep you and your pets safe with these fire safety tips-protect your pets from fire hazards and stay prepared when emergencies strike.

▪️Prevention:
✅Secure Stove K***s: Use covers or remove stove k***s to prevent pets from accidentally turning on burners.
✅Control Open Flames: Keep pets away from candles, fireplaces, and other open flames, or use flameless alternatives.
✅Protect Cords: Use cord protectors and cover electrical outlets to prevent pets from chewing on wires, which can cause sparks.

▪️Emergency Plan:
✅Include Pets: Add your pets to your family's fire escape plan and designate a safe meeting place outside.
✅Know Hiding Spots: Identify your pet's preferred hiding places and ensure these are known to your family.
✅Alert Rescuers: Place "Pet Alert" stickers or window clings on your front door or windows, indicating the number and types of pets inside your home.
✅Keep Essentials Ready: Keep leashes and carriers by a door so they are easy to grab in an emergency.

▪️During a Fire
✅Execute Your Plan: Follow your fire escape plan, and try to take your pets with you using leashes and carriers.
✅Don't Go Back In: For human safety, do not re-enter a burning building to retrieve a pet.
✅Inform Firefighters: Once outside, immediately tell the firefighters that pets are still inside and provide their known hiding locations.

🔥 Dryer fires can happen in an instant, if not properly maintained and cleaned. Here are some dryer fire safety tips to prevent fires in your home.

✅ Clean the trap: Clear the lint screen before or after every single load of laundry.
✅ Wash the filter: Wash the mesh screen with warm, soapy water every few months to remove invisible waxy residue left by dryer sheets.
✅ Check pockets: Empty all coins, lighters, and matches from clothing before washing and drying.
✅ Use rigid metal: Connect your appliance using rigid or semi-rigid sheet metal venting, avoiding flammable plastic or thin foil accordion ducts.
✅ Clear the exhaust: Inspect the outdoor vent flap regularly to ensure it opens smoothly when the dryer runs and is not blocked by lint, snow, or nests.
✅ Deep clean ducts: Vacuum out lint accumulation from behind the machine and professional-grade brush clean the entire exhaust duct path annually.
✅ Stay awake and home: Turn off the dryer if you leave the house or go to bed.

▪️For today’s flashback Friday, we have a colorized photo as well as the original black-and-white photo believed to be taken by Bill Montaigne.
👉🏻Pictured below is the LaFrance pumper purchased in 1959. In the driver's seat is Firefighter Jack Carnegie and standing is Firefighter Arnold O'Kane.
▪️Jack was hired in 1946 and Arnold was hired in 1954.
▪️Arnold O’Kane went on to become the Chief of the Pembroke Fire Department in 1982 and remained Chief until his retirement in 1988.
🤗 A big thank you again to the Ottawa Valley Historical Society and Sylvia Whitmore for sharing this photo with us.
