Local Immigration Partnership - Lanark & Renfrew Our Purpose: To strengthen the role of local communities in integrating and serving newcomers..

Local Immigration Partnerships (LIP) are funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), a department of the government of Canada, and support communities in bringing together service providers, settlement agencies, community groups, employers and other key municipal organizations to create a welcoming and inclusive community for newcomers. In Lanark and Renfrew Counties, the work of Local Immigration Partnerships is administered by Algonquin College’s Pembroke Campus. To enable this work to happen, LIP staff conduct research to identify challenges that are preventing newcomers from fully participating in the economic, social, cultural and recreational life of the community. The LIP team also identifies new opportunities with a goal of helping newcomers settle in rural areas. A key principle of LIP’s work is developing relationships and linkages between like-minded organizations to encourage collaboration that builds on the strengths of multiple partners. Welcoming communities are created by helping municipalities understand the benefits of newcomer attraction and assisting them with their planning and execution of activities that support immigrants who settle in their communities.

There is something powerful about sharing your culture.

It might be through food, music, sport, stories, traditions, or simply an invitation to learn something new. When we share a piece of who we are, we create an opportunity for someone else to understand us a little better, and for all of us to discover what we have in common.

Our recent Multicultural Market, held in partnership with the Petawawa Ramble, was a wonderful example of what can happen when a community makes space for those connections.

It was a day filled with culture, conversation, food, family, and plenty of opportunities to learn from one another. From trying something new to sharing something familiar, every interaction helped build a little more understanding and a stronger sense of belonging.

Creating welcoming communities isn’t just about welcoming people when they arrive. It’s about creating opportunities for people to participate, contribute, be curious, and feel that their culture has a place here.

Thank you to everyone who shared their culture, showed up with curiosity, and helped make the day such a meaningful celebration of our community.

When we make space for each other’s stories and traditions, we all become a little more connected. ❤️
