Little Hands, Big lessons!
Our pets are part of the family, and teaching children how to safely and respectfully interact with dogs and cats is one of the most important lessons we can give them.
As much as we love seeing the special bonds between children and animals, its important to remember that even the sweetest, most patient family pet has boundaries.
😽 Respect their personal space, just like people, animals don't always want to be touched, hugged, kissed, or picked up. Teach children that its okay when a pet wants some alone time.
🐶 Gentle hands, happy pets! No pulling tails, tugging ears, grabbing fur, climbing on pets or squeezing them tightly. Show children how to gently pet animals and recognize when they have had enough, if your child was another dog and began pulling on tails or tugging at ears a dog could give a natural correction.
🐈 Let sleeping dogs, and cats lie. Never disturb a pet while they're sleeping, eating chewing a bone or enjoying a favorite toy. These are times when animals deserve their space.
🐕 Learn their language, Dogs and cats communicate through body language! Growling, hissing, stiffening, hiding, moving away, flattened ears or a swishing tail can all be signs that an animal is uncomfortable. Teach children to recognize and respect these signals rather than pushing an animal limits. And remember, just because your own furry family member might enjoy a gentle squeeze from the toddler, does not mean every other animal they encounter is going to feel the same way.
🐾 Give your animals a safe space, every pet should have a quiet place to retreat when they need a break. Whether it's a crate, bed, or separate room, children should understand that this is the animals personal space and not somewhere to follow them.
👪 Supervision is everything, animals should never be expected to tolerate rough handling simply because they're family pets. A growl or a hiss is communication, not bad behaviour, and should never be punished. Instead calmly separate the child and animal and give the pet space.
Teaching children kindness, empathy and respect for animals doesn't just help prevent bites and scratches. It helps build trusting relationships that can last a lifetime.
