OPERATION MEDUSA was the first large significant land battle since the inception of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), it was a Canadian-led operation during the second Battle of Panjwaii of the War in Afghanistan. This was the first time Canadians had fought the enemy at such scale since the Korean War, blooding the 1st Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group since almost half a century.
Operation Medusa targeted a network of villages in Kandahar province used by the Taliban as a staging area for attacks on the nearby provincial capital. Numerous small farming villages in the valley of the Arghandab River southwest of Kandahar City. NATO forces believed it to be a Taliban stronghold. It was previously assaulted in the Battle of Panjwaii during the summer of 2006, but Taliban forces quickly re-asserted their presence after the operation ended.
Stronger than expected resistance was put up by the Taliban forces, whom NATO expected to simply retreat. Instead, they prepared for the decisive engagement, deciding to take advantage of the defensively advantageous ground of the district, and laid traps for the coming NATO troops. The NATO troops' objective was, basically, to capture a grouping of villages known as Pashmul, which had been the site of repeated battles throughout the summer of 2006 and where several Canadian soldiers were killed on August 3rd of the Patricia Battle Group.
This operation was significant for the soldiers and leadership of 1RCR, during the event of casualties many acts of heroic leadership took place. Soldiers stepping up to take over command of their sections, platoons and Company when their leadership became casualties in the heavy fighting.
Operation Medusa saw Canadians brush the dust off their reputation as fierce war fighters, once again running towards the sounds of battle.
"I knew we would get into it too, I know a lot of guys think that they train and will never fight but I always figured that the Army trained for war and eventually I would be there." - Cpl Mike Blois, 4PL Bravo Coy 1RCR
12 Canadian soldiers were killed in OP Medusa (2-17 Sept 2006).
