Peterborough Northumberland Crime Stoppers Crime Stoppers is a non-profit charitable organization that combines the best efforts of the community, the media and the police in the fight against crime.

Each week the media appeals for information about unsolved crimes. A Crime of the Week is highlighted in newspaper articles, radio and television spots. People are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers anonymously to report any information that may help solve this or any other crime. A group of dedicated, concerned citizens make up the civilian Board of Directors for Crime Stoppers of Peterborough and

Media Release - Monday, June 8, 2026
Mischief Arrest
A 29-year-old Peterborough man is facing a criminal charge of mischief after breaking a local restaurant storefront window in downtown Peterborough early Sunday morning.
At approximately 2:35am on June 7, 2026, Peterborough Police received calls about a restaurant window that had been smashed in the downtown. With the assistance of video evidence, including police CCTV cameras, a suspect was identified. The investigation determined that the suspect had been removed from a nearby establishment prior to breaking the window. While walking past the restaurant, the suspect smashed the restaurant window with his fist and continued walking.
On Sunday afternoon at approximately 5:00pm, the suspect, aware that Officers were looking for him, turned himself into the Police at which time he was arrested and charged with:
- Mischief under $5,000
The suspect was released, on an Undertaking and Promise to Appear in Court, in accordance with the requirements of the Criminal Code, and will appear in Court, September 1, 2026, to answer to this charge.

UPDATE 1 - Fatal Collision | Hwy 401, Port Hope
The Northumberland OPP are investigating a fatal two-vehicle collision on Highway 401 eastbound near the Port Hope service centre on May 30, 2026, at approximately
11:00 a.m.
It is believed one vehicle was stopped on the shoulder when the driver exited. During the incident, the parked vehicle was struck by another vehicle, and the individual outside the vehicle was also struck.
The victim was transported to hospital and airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre with life-threatening injuries, where they have since been pronounced deceased.
No other serious injuries were reported.
Hwy 401 EB was closed at Newtonville for several hours while members, including the OPP TIME team, conducted the investigation. All lanes reopened later that afternoon.
Investigation ongoing.

OPP APPEAL FOR WITNESSES REGARDING SERIOUS COLLISION ON HIGHWAY 401

are investigating a serious collision on EB and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

On Saturday, May 30, 2026, at approximately 11:00 a.m., police, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the fire department were dispatched to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 401 eastbound near the service center in the Municipality of Port Hope, Ontario.

It is believed that one of the involved vehicles was parked on the shoulder when its driver exited the vehicle. During the incident, the parked vehicle was struck by another vehicle, and the motorist who had exited was also struck.

The individual was transported to a local hospital and then airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre by Ornge air ambulance with life threatening injuries. There were no other serious injuries to those involved.

Highway 401 eastbound was closed at Newtownville for the investigation, with assistance from the OPP Traffic Incident Management & Enforcement (TIME) team. All lanes reopened at around 3:30 p.m. on May 30, 2026.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage from the area at the time of the incident is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. POLICE SEEK PUBLIC ASSISTANCE IN RACHEL RUSSELL HOMICIDE

The Ontario Provincial Police continue to investigate the 2007 homicide of 28-year-old Rachel Russell of Cobourg. Rachel was last seen on October 25, 2007, and was found deceased on November 12, 2007, near train tracks east of Ontario Street. Her death was determined to be the result of blunt force trauma.

Rachel’s case has now been included in the newly released Missing and Unsolved Murdered Indigenous People (MUMIP) Report.

A $50,000 reward remains available for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
