In response to the financial crisis Fleming is facing and the provincial conservatives’ abandonment of post secondary education, the governing board of Fleming has, without consulting employees and their unions or the community at large, decided to merge with St Lawrence College in Kingston.
This decision is indicative of a growing reality in our institutions and in our society broadly. Disregard for democracy, for working class people, and for the public good in favour of singleminded focus on the bottom line. This decision threatens yet more college programs and the livelihoods of yet more of our community members, all to serve the conservative austerity agenda.
There is more than enough wealth in the hands of the rich to ensure our colleges and universities work for students, workers, and our economy. The NDP stands with Fleming workers and will continue to fight for an Ontario where post secondary is a top priority.
