Brain Injury Association Peterborough Region (BIAPR) is very excited to announce the expansion of its Adult Day Programs, enhancing supports available to individuals living with acquired brain injury (ABI) and related complex needs across the region.
This service expansion will increase access to critical programming, including recreation therapy, social service work, and specialized supports designed to reduce isolation, promote independence, and improve overall quality of life for participants.
“Our team is thrilled to be growing our capacity to meet the rising needs in our community. Individuals living with acquired brain injury often face significant barriers to housing stability, social connection, neurorehabilitation, and system navigation. This expansion allows us to open these supports for more individuals and eliminate our waitlist,” said Executive Director Emily Jones.

The enhanced services will include:

● Increased availability of Adult Day Programming
● Expanded recreation therapy opportunities
● Additional wellness supports
● Greater access to community integration initiatives

Demand for ABI services continues to grow, particularly among individuals experiencing intersecting challenges such as mental health concerns, homelessness, and intimate partner violence. By expanding its programming, BIAPR aims to reduce waitlists and ensure timely, person-centered support for those who need them most.
“This growth reflects our ongoing commitment to responsive, inclusive, and trauma-informed care. We are excited to continue working alongside our community partners to deliver meaningful, life-enhancing programs”

August is Overdose Awareness Month — and while much of the public conversation centers on overdose deaths, there is an often-overlooked consequence of non-fatal overdoses: acquired brain injury caused by anoxia (lack of oxygen) or hypoxia (insufficient oxygen).

These injuries can occur when an overdose temporarily stops or slows breathing, depriving the brain of oxygen. Survivors may live with lasting challenges in memory, mobility, communication, and behavior.

The Brain Injury Association Peterborough Region would like to outline non-fatal overdoses and brain injury outlines key challenges:

- Limited or no access to post-hospital rehabilitation due to lack of funding.
- Treatment programs often lack staff trained to address both brain injury and substance use.
- Little to no tracking of brain injuries caused by non-lethal overdoses.

But it's never hopeless, and there's always work that can be done to mitigate these impacts. Some steps to address this issue include:

- Raising awareness of the link between overdose and brain injury.
- Encouraging physicians to document brain injury after non-fatal overdoses.
- Conducting research on the incidence and connection between brain injury and substance use.
- Ensuring rehab programs address co-occurring substance use.
- Training behavioral health providers to adapt care for people with brain injury. Please check out our community partners working within harm reduction strategies as well! 🕯️International Overdose Awareness Day, August 31 🕯️
Drug poisoning is not a personal or moral failure. It is the result of a public health crisis that has been met with stigma, criminalization and systemic neglect. We live in a world where policies STILL prioritize punishment over support, where evidence based solutions like Harm Reduction, Safe Supply, Safe Consumption and decriminalization are undermined by fear and misinformation.
Until we respond with care instead of judgement, the losses will continue.
Join us in honouring the lives lost to overdose and in standing fiercely for those still with us!
💜 This day is about grief without stigma.
💪 It’s about action without shame.
🫂 And it’s about love without judgment.
